COLD STREAK IN 3RD QUARTER SINKS POTSDAM IN N.Y. SEMIS

Potsdam's Chris Whispell dribble penetrates inside against Burke Catholic's Dante Cowart and Matt Cooney (12).  Potsdam led by as much as eight points in the second quarter.  However in the third period up 40-34, Potsdam went stone-cold from the field and the Eagles scored 13 straight points -- a run from which the Stoners did not recover.  The Sandstoners fell to Burke Catholic 70-59 in the New York State Class B semifinal.  Zach Adams brought his "A-Game" scoring 21 points and hauling in 13 rebounds, while John Coleman added 16 points and Chris Whispell finished his varsity career with 10 points.  Jeff Cochi led Burke with 19 points.

Potsdam's Zach Adams skies over Burke Catholic's Matt Cooney who tries to draw the charge.  Adams scored 21 points for the Sandstoners.  The teams traded baskets for the first five minutes in an 8-8 opening.  Potsdam jumped ahead 15-10 to launch the second quarter and gained its biggest lead at 21-13 just two minutes later.  Burke Catholic responded by forging a 10-2 run in tying at 23-23 just before the half.  Burke's 13-0 run in a 2:00 spurt in the third quarter dipped Potsdam into a 47-40 hole from which they did not recover.

POTSDAM 62, PLATTSBURGH 38

Potsdam surged late in the third quarter with a 7-0 run to command an insurmountable 13-point lead, then added a 10-0 run to open the fourth quarter. BURNT HILLS STRUGGLES BACK TO BEAT MASSENA 39-31

Massena's Taylor Elsner (13) and Troy Meyers (22) battle for the ball with a Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake player.  The Red Raiders led 9-3 after the first quarter, but Burnt Hills took over the lead, 25-24, at the end of the third quarter.  Massena stayed within five points in the fourth quarter, but at a time when field goals were at a premium, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake took advantage of free throws created by the need to foul in the final minute to put away the Red Raiders 39-31 in a highly- defensive game in the New York State Region II semifinals.  (Jeremy Smith photo)  Game Gallery

GERMANTOWN 56, CHATEAUGAY 48
An 18-9 final quarter was the difference for the Germantown Clippers who blocked the Chateaugay Bulldogs from a fourth straight trip to the New York State Final Four with a 56-48 win in the New York State Class D Boys Basketball Quarterfinals. The Bulldogs entered the fourth quarter with a 39-38 lead and appeared to be poised to take command when they netted the first four points of the frame on buckets from Eli Franze and Jacob Layton. However, Germantown cranked up its defense to full force, took command with an 11-3 run and finished with an 18-5 surge. G’town’s Tom Griffin was the game’s high scorer with 22 points. Franze topped the Bulldogs with15 points, while Layton pumped in eight points and Eric Dwyer and Alex Stalter each dished in seven.

MAPLE HILL ROLLS IN 2ND HALF TO BEAT B-M IN REGION 2 SEMI

Brushton-Moira's Tim Tudor (23) reaches straight up while attempting to disrupt the shot from Maple Hill's Chris Despart (30).  Maple Hills pulled away from a close 38-35 halftime lead with a 12-2 run to open the second half.  The Panthers got back within six points midway through the third quarter, but that's as close as they would come the rest of the way.  Maple Hill defeated Brushton-Moira 79-58 to win the New York State Class C Region II semifinal game at SUNY Potsdam.  Despart finished with a game-best 22 points.  Brushton-Moira was led by Josh Sevey's 20 points and John Green's 11 points.  (Eric Foote photo)    Game Gallery    NCSN Game Broadcast

A very spirited Chateaugay Bulldogs team claimed out of a 13-point first-half hole and clawed their way back to within a point in the final 90 seconds, before bowing to the Massena Red Raiders 57-50 in the Section X Overall Semifinals. Massena blew open a 21-10 lead after the first quarter of play, but a charged-up Bulldog defense forced several turnovers and outscored the Raiders 16-14 in the second frame. The Bulldogs trailed 35-26 at intermission. Eli Franze knocked down a key three-ball with two minutes to go to pull Chateaugay within two, but the Dogs only managed one point down the stretch as the Raiders rolled out the final six points. Massena’s Trevor Bacon led all scorers with 13 points. Taylor Elsner added 12, Matt Jenack hoisted two trifectas for 10 points and Jon Paul Dumas added 10. Masena lost the services of Brady Condlin in the second quarter for the balance of the game after severely spraining his left ankle on a drive to the hoop.  For Chateaugay, Alex Stalter dished in 11 points, while Ian Henderson also added 11, including three 3-pointers. Jacob Layton added nine points, Eric Dwyer contributed eight points and Eli Franze dropped in seven points. Massena advances to the Section X Championship game to face the Potsdam Sandstoners on Friday night. Chateaugay will play either Moriah or Crown Point from Section VII in the first round of the N.Y. State playoffs.

MASSENA UPSETS POTSDAM
TO REPEAT SECTION X TITLE

Massena students mob the Red Raiders basketball team just moments after they pulled off a 49-43 win over the top-seeded Potsdam Sandstoners to repeat as Section X Boys Basketball Champions.  Massena took advantage of Potsdam's scoring struggles in the final quarter, rebounding from a 41-34 deficit and outscoring the Sandstoners 15-2 in the final 5:48 of the contest.  Massena tied the game with 3:20 left in the game, then Trevor Bacon gave the Raiders their first lead with 2:27 left.

With the daunting task of overturning two big losses to the Potsdam Sandstoners during the regular season, Massena Coach Tom Miller preached to his team in practice this week, "You gotta believe."  But after the team's leading scorer Brady Condlin went down with a severe ankle sprain and torn ligaments in the semifinals, "believing" might have gotten quite a bit harder.  But the Raiders never lost faith, even when the Stoners jumped to a 9-0 lead and shut down Massena for the first four minutes.  Even when Potsdam opened a brief double-digit lead in the first half and appeared ready to blow the game open, Massena kept it within reach with several mini runs. Potsdam led 27-18 at the half.  And even after Potsdam opened the second half going back to a double-digit lead, Massena still pushed back -- until the seemingly impossible happened.  The Sandstoners' steady scoring went dry and their often impenetrable defense faltered, leaving two wide-open looks including a wide-open putback for Trevor Bacon, that gave the Raiders' comeback renewed life.   Massena surged back to within two points, 36-34, to open the fourth quarter only to have Potsdam force the Raiders back with a five-point run capped by Scott Bartenstein’s three-pointer with 5:48 to go. But it was Potsdam’s last hurrah. Two minutes and seven straight points later, Massena tied the contest on a bucket by Taylor Elsner. Trevor Bacon, who led the Raiders wiht 15 points and 11 boards, got a put-back with 2:27 remaining to give Massena its first lead of the game – and they never gave it back. The Raiders completed an improbable 15-2 run in the final 5:48 of play to snatch a 49-43 upset win. Elsner also finished with 15 points and seven rebounds. Dumas dished nine assists along with his seven points. Bartenstein led Potsdam with 14 points, while John Coleman added 12 points, five boards and three assists. Massena will meet either Burnt Hills or Lansingburg in the New York State opening round playoff. Potsdam will face either Mechanicville, Fonda or the Section VII champion in the state quarterfinals.

OVERALL SEMIFINAL: POTSDAM THUMPS B-M PANTHERS 79-31

Potsdam’s Chris Whispell (24) fires off a three-pointer over Brushton-Moira’s Andrew Martin (15).  Potsdam raced out to a quick 12-0 lead, setting the pace for a 79-31 win over the Panthers in the Section X overall semifinals.  Scott Bartenstein led the Sandstoners with 20 points.  (Eric Foote photo)

The powerhouse Potsdam Sandstoners gave Brushton-Moira no time to enjoy the atmosphere of a Section X Final Four game. In less than four minutes, the Class B champions repeatedly trapped, stolen, transitioned and scored in a 12-0 blitz. And just when it appeared that the Panthers might have recovered to make it 12-5, Potsdam’s defensive posse rounded up another spurt of turnovers, while turning loose John Coleman on a feeding frenzy for 12 of his 14 points.  After cruising out to a 33-15 halftime lead, the Sandstoners then  >>>

doomed Brushton-Moira with a 14-1 run to open the third quarter for a commanding 41-16 lead. Potsdam went on to claim a 79- 31 win in the Section X overall semifinal game. Scott Bartenstein splashed 20 points, while Zach Adams added 15 and Chris Whispell generated 14 points. Nine Panthers put points on the board, led by Josh Sevey with nine points. The win lifted Potsdam to 20-1 on the season. They will face Massena for the Section X Championship, then head to state play. Brushton-Moira, now headed directly to state competition, fell to 12-9 overall.

POTSDAM HALTS O.F.A.'S RUN OF 7 TITLES WITH 69-41 WIN

Potsdam's Josh Adams draws a triple team of Ogdensburg players, but still manages to hang onto the ball and fire off a bucket.  Potsdam went on to defeat the Blue Devils 69-41 and end O.F.A.'s string of seven straight Section X Class B titles with a 69-41 victory. (Bob LaRue photo)

After fashioning a 32-22 halftime lead, Potsdam's stingy defense kicked the transition game into high-scoring gear with a 17-2 run in the middle of the third quarter to rip open a 57-30 lead, en route to a 69-41 victory over the Ogdensburg Blue Devils in the Section X Class C Championship.  While Potsdam already had Ogdensburg on the ropes in early the third quarter, O.F.A. top scorer Gene Bouyer took two quick fouls and without him in the game for the next several minutes, the Sandstoners capitalized by opening a 27-point lead by the end of the quarter. Coach Steve Kmack in NCSN’s post-game interview commented, "A 10-point halftime lead meant nothing so we were looking for a chance to expand it. We pressed, got some steals and just took off."  Potsdam was led by four players in double-figures: Scott Bartenstein’s game-high 19 points, Chris Whispell with 17 points, Jon Coleman with 15 and Zach Adams with 12 points. Bouyer finished his high-school career with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Owen Luckie added eight points. Potsdam’s stingy defense limited the quality shots for the Blue Devils, who shot just 15- for-50 from the field. The Blue Devils finished their season at 15-5, including a ranking of 20th in the state this week.

During the championship, the Potsdam Sandstoner mascot displays a giant head display of Potsdam Coach Steve Kmack.

LUCKIE & BOUYER LEAD O.F.A. COMEBACK VS. GOUVERNEUR

Gouverneur's Alex Bush (55) tries to break double-team pressure of Ogdensburg's Owen Luckie and Jarrid Morrow in the front court.  The Wildcats held the advantage most of the first half and a seven-point lead at intermission.  However, Luckie and Gene Bouyer each scored 15 points and O.F.A. outscored Gouverneur 17-10 in the fourth en route to a 50-40 victory in the Section X Class B semifinals and a berth into the Class B final vs. Potsdam.  (Chris Engel photo)   Game Gallery

With his high school career potentially on the line, the section’s top scorer, Gene Bouyer (10) stepped up play with Owen Luckie for a combined 30 points. David Crowder chipped in 11 points for #2-seeded Ogdensburg. Gouverneur led most of the first half, outscoring the Blue Devils 17-9 in the second quarter and overtaking O.F.A. 26-19 at the half. In the third frame, the Blue Devils overpowered Gouverneur 14-4 to regain control of the contest and ensured victory with a 17-10 closing quarter. BRUSHTON-MOIRA RECLAIMS
"C" TITLE VS. TUPPER LAKE

Brushton-Moira's Josh Sevey (21) takes the ball to the rack against Tupper Lake's Matt Deschene (3).  The #3-seeded Brushton-Moira Panthers led by 12 points with four minutes remaining, but had to fight off a furious Tupper Lake comeback that drew the Jacks within three points at 42-39 in the final minute.  (Chris Engel photo)    Game Gallery

Despite a scare in the final three minutes, the Brushton-Moira Panthers were able to fend off a late Tupper Lake run to seal a 46-39 win to claim the Section X Class C Championship. Tupper Lake gained the first lead in the game and appeared to have the Panthers on the run early, but tenacious man-to-man defense forced the Lumberjacks into a series of tough shots and turnovers, allowing Brushton-Moira to take a 16-10 lead in the middle of the second quarter. The Lumberjacks reversed the game flow before the end of the first half when Jacob Klossner slashed along the baseline for a two-pointer, then followed with a three-ball in the final seconds to lift the Panthers back within three points before intermission.  However that would be as close as the Jacks would come. Adrian Martin scored all six of his points in the third quarter to lead an 11-4 run after intermission that proved to be too much for Tupper Lake to overcome. Klossner brought the Jacks back to within one possession at 42-39 late in the fourth frame when he drained a three-pointer from the corner, but the Panthers shut down the Tupper Lake offense the rest of the way. Senior guard Josh Sevey led Brushton-Moira with 17 points, including four foul shots buried in the closing minute to seal a 46-39 victory over the fourth-seeded Lumberjacks. B-M's Jason Aubrey added seven points. Klossner netted a game-best 19 points, including 7-for-8 from the free-throw line. Nick O'Neill added nine points. The Jacks finished their season at 7-10 overall.
