HARRISVILLE 55, ARGYLE 51
The Harrisville Pirates fended off a 14-point comeback by Argyle in the final quarter to win the New York State Class D Girls Basketball Quarterfinals 55-51 and advance to the State Final Four for the first time ever against Charlotte Valley next week at Hudson Valley Community College. Katlyn Hart led the Pirates with 16 points, while Patty and Kathleen Coloney each dished in 12 points. The Scots rushed back to within a point, 46-45, midway through the fourth period, but Hart buried two key three-pointers in the stretch to lift the Pirates who improved to 18-4 overall. Argyle’s Jacquelyn Miller led all scorers with 20 points, including five trifectas.

MAPLE HILL 52, BRUSHTON-MOIRA 46
Brushton-Moira’s Chenice Russell splashed 21 points and Emily Lepage added 10, but the Panthers could not recovered from a quick 18-10 first-quarter start by Section II’s Maple Hill in a 52-46 loss in the New York State Class C Girls Basketball Quarterfinals at Adirondack Community College. Maple Hill’s Katie Roth led all shooters with 24 points. Maple Hill remained unbeaten at 23-0 while completing a sweep of Brushton-Moira, including in the boys’s playoffs. The Panthers finished their 2009-‘10 campaign at 21-2.

O.F.A. NIPS SARANAC CENTRAL 46-44 IN N.Y. REGIONAL OPENER

Ogdensburg girls basketball players jump all over teammate Megan Morrison after she completed two clutch free throws with just 0:00.4 seconds left in regulation to break a 44-44 tie to power the Blue Devils a 46-44 win over Saranac Central in the New York State Region II semifinals at SUNY Potsdam.  Morrison capped a 27-point performance with the game-winning free throws.  The Blue Devils erased an early seven-point hole, trailed 15-11 at the end of the first quarter, but used an 18-11 run to pull ahead 29-26 at the half.  Saranac Central reversed the lead 40-37 through three periods when the Devils began to run into foul trouble.  The Chiefs evened the score in the final 20 seconds, before the court-long rush by Morrison that resulted in a foul with 0.4 seconds left.  The Blue Devils advance to face Watervliet in the Region Final on Saturday.  (Eric Foote photo)  Game Gallery   Game Broadcast

B-M PANTHERS, HARRISVILLE WINS FIRST ROUND OF STATES

BRUSHTON-MOIRA 54, TICONDEROGA 32
March 10: The Brushton-Moira Panthers learned the lessons from the season’s first defeat last week in the Section X semifinals and dished Section VII Champion Ticonderoga a solid defeat, 54-32, in the New York State Region II semifinals at SUNY Plattsburgh. The Panthers raced out to a quick 17-4 first-quarter lead on the shooting prowess of Taylor Keck and Shayna Russell who combined for 12 points in the first quarter alone. Keck wound up with 11 points while Kelsey Manchester dealt 10 points for the win. Jocelyn Barber led the Sentinels with nine points. Brushton-Moira advances to play undefeated Section II Champion Maple Hill (22-0) in the state quarterfinals this weekend.

HARRISVILLE 43, WESTPORT 39
March 10: In their first New York State playoff appearance since the early 1990's, the Harrisville Lady Pirates took on a previously-undefeated Westport and emerged with a hard-fought 43-39 win over the Section VII champions in the State Region II semifinal at SUNY Plattsburgh. The Pirates trailed 32-28 through three quarters. However, the Pirates battled back to deadlock at 35- 35. With 3:06 remaining, Harrisville’s Patty Coloney – who netted 23 points total – fired off a mid-range jumper to pull the Pirates ahead for good. A 15-7 run in the final quarter delivered the Pirates the win and blemished the Westport record to a season-ending 20-1. Willa McKinley dropped in 17 points for Westport. Malone's Brittany Marshall (45) drives to the basket making hard contact with Averill Park's Katie Hawes (23).  Malone fell behind 15-7 after the first quarter and 26-13 at the half, but a 12-2 start for Averill Park to open the second half doomed the Huskies who never got on track for a comeback.  The Warriors kept Malone's top scorers at bay for most of the first half and limited the Huskies to just six points in the final quarter.

SLOW START, SHOOTING WOES LEAVE HARRISVILLE 2ND BEST

Clymer’s Stephanie Gilkinson (42) grabs a rebound over Harrisville’s Megan Berwald (3).  For the second day in a row, the Harrisville Pirates came out slowly and fell behind early 8-0 to the Clymer Pirates in the first quarter of the New York State Class D Championship game.  Through much of the game, as the shots did not fall, the Lady Pirates fell behind by as much as 21 points.  Harrisville started a bit of a run to get back within 12 points, but in the end fell 49-35.  Clymer was led by Andrea Lictus who had 17 points while Harrisville was led by Patty Coloney and Katlyn Hart who both had nine points.

March 21: The Harrisville Pirates' quest for a state title fell short as Section VI's Clymer claimed the New York State Class D crown with a 49-35 victory at Hudson Valley Community College. Scoring woes haunted Harrisville early on as they did in the semifinal game. Clymer jumped out to a 24-9 halftime lead. In the second half, Harrisville limited the field goals for Clymer, but the eventual champions made up for it from the foul line going 18-for-29. Tournament MVP Andrea Lictus scored 17 points with seven coming from the foul line. Down 21 at one point in the second half, Harrisville managed a little rally as Katie Hart hit three straight three-pointers to close the gap to 44-32 with three minutes to play. But Clymer had an answer for every Harrisville charge down the stretch. Kailyn Bentley managed 11 points for Clymer and was named to the All-Tournament team. Patty Coloney and Katie Hart each scored nine points each for Harrisville. Coloney and Katie French were both named to the All-Tournament team.

Story by Chris Engel, North Country SportsNet
The Harrisville Pirates earned a trip to the New York State Class D Girls Basketball Championship with a comeback win over Section IV Champion Charlotte Valley 33-29. The Pirates were held to only one point in the first quarter and trailed by seven after each of the first two quarters.  However, a rally started in the third frame on a dramatic halfcourt three-point shot by Kathleen Coloney as the shot clock expired, cut the Wildcat lead to 20-16 and sparked a Pirates comeback win. Harrisville kept it close with a chance to tie as Katie Hart tied the game with a three-pointer at 23-23 in fourth. Charlotte Valley's leading scorer Sam Meyerhoff gave her team the lead back with two free throws.  But Kathleen Coloney's offensive putback tied ithe game again at 25-25 with just over two minutes to play. Taylor Wood eventually put the Pirates in the lead for good just seconds later as she buried a perimeter left-side three to give Harrisville a 28-25 advantage. Wood also knocked home another trifecta with 45 seconds to play that extended the lead to 31-27 and what proved to be enough to win. Harrisville plays in their first-ever state title game vs. Clymer from Section IX on Sunday afternoon. Patty Coloney (9 rebounds) and Kathleen Coloney (4 blocks) each led the Pirates with nine points.  Meyerhoff finished with a double-double scoring 19 points and accumulating 15 rebounds for Charlotte Valley. The Blue Devils deployed hard-nosed, full-court, man-to-man for much of the game, while having difficulty cracking Potsdam’s 1-3-1 zone which forced the Blue Devils into nearly a dozen missed shots beyond the three-point arc for most of the first half. Drummond notched seven of her 14 points in the second quarter when the Blue Devils jumped ahead 13-5 and never gave Potsdam back the lead. Potsdam finished 9-11 overall.
