Norwood-Norfolk
boys handily defeated both the
Potsdam and Gouverneur cross country
teams on September 25th, bringing
their record to a tidy 5-0. "It's a
good course. It kind of went on
forever, but it was worth it. I
didn't like the gravel, but overall
it was worth it," said
Norwood-Norfolk's Dylan Spicer. The
course itself loops back four times,
making it difficult for runners to
judge their distances. While
Gouverneur's course is a relatively
flat one, just one small hill per
half-mile, high heat and humidity
helped level the playing field. Most
of the race is run in the woods
where the thick trees lower the
temperature, helping runners to
lower times in the cooler shade.
Norwood-Norfolk's Jon Eng grabbed
first place with an impressive
18:02, while Potsdam's George Morris
and Alex Brehm came in with times of
18:44 and 19:01 on the 3.1-mile
course. The Flyers responded taking
4th through 7th places for the 23-36
win over Potsdam and defeated
Gouverneur 15-49. Potsdam also
dropped the Wildcats 17-42. For the
Modified boys, Norwood's Joshua Eng
Posted a striking 7:28 on the 1.3
mile course, powering around in the
field in a highly impressive run.
Norwood took the top three spots
with Troy Kovach and Chris Stone
taking third and forth with times of
7:56 and 8:06.

FLYERS GRAB FIRST TWO SPOTS IN
PRESEASON SCRIMMAGE AT N-N |
|
|

The Fall 2007 Boys Cross Country
season got off to a hot start on
a sultry Thursday with a
preseason scrimmage at the
Norwood-Norfolk course -- the
home of the 2007 New York State
Cross Country Championships this
year. The course has been
reviewed by state officials and
declared a reported 7 of 10
degree of difficulty -- well
groomed and ready for state
competition.

Norwood-Norfolk's Jon Eng took advantage of
home-course familiarity and quickly put sizeable
distance ahead of the pack. Eng finished the
scrimmage event 0:58 ahead of all other competitors,
logging a time of 17:50 for the practice run.

The Flyers' Austin Dufresne (middle) gained ground in
the middle of the race to pull into a second-place
finish in the scrimmage.

The course has been groomed for the 2007 State Cross
Country Championship to take place in early November.

NORWOOD-NORFOLK PREPARES FOR

Over 1,000 people gathered behind
Norwood-Norfolk Central School on
Sept. 22, to watch or compete on the
William J. Stone Cross Country
trails, site of the upcoming 2007
State Cross Country Championships.
Nearly 800 runners from schools
across New York State gathered
inside the small school's track,
pitching colored tents, drinking
gallons of water and waiting their
turn to compete under the bright
North Country sun. Some eating
granola bars, and others playing
football, high school cross-country
athletes from half a state away
began to run warm up laps in
preparation of their races. For
Section X runners, trips to
Norwood-Norfolk are pretty standard.
For other schools such as Tully,
currently ranked First in Class C,
it's a different story. Dozens of
teams and hundreds of runners on a
course that supports no more than
four abreast is, at its finest,
undesirable. Races, such as the
Varsity Boys Class 2 sported as many
as 145 runners. Teams stacked into
rows inside their starting boxes. In
some cases, teams too small to
compete for placement, such as
Canton, started on the dividers
between boxes. "It's great to see so
many kids from all over the state
come here and see the course today."
said Canton Assistant coach Mike
Preston. Other coaches shared in his
sentiment."[We came here] For one
reason. We want to see the course,"
said Tully coach Jim Paccia. The
Tully team, who require a three-hour
drive to Norwood-Norfolk literally
camped out on a field the night
before provided by one of their
athlete's aunts. Norwood-Norfolk
will be hosting this year's
championship meet, so it's very
important for runners to know the
course they'll be competing on. As
the course will close before the
State competition, teams such as
Tully and Queensbury needed to see
what type of trail they'll be
running on. And it certainly isn't
an easy one. State officials have
ranked the track a seven-of-ten
degree of difficulty. Said one
runner shortly after finishing, "I
just wanted to get down on all
fours." The William J. Stone course,
from a spectators perspective,
appears relatively tame, perhaps
even mild. Once you run past the
crowds and head into the cedars,
everything changes. The Flyers' home
course is almost never flat. Runners
are faced with constant zigzagging
and an uphill gradient. Every time
it appears you may be near the
finish line, runners are greeted
with hills, aptly entitled names
such as "Stinger" and "Swear Hill."
"Hills make teams... hills give you
strength and endurance at the same
time. They give you the guys you
need to run hard," said Paccia,
whose Section 3 team placed a
predicted four Tully runners in the
top ten. However, it is disputed as
to whom the hills might give an
advantage. "It's a little bit
challenging," said Assistant Coach
Preston with a slight grin, "I think
it's an advantage Section X runners
will have." Total Runners: 787 Top
