POTSDAM 42, ST. LAWRENCE CENTRAL 8
After an 0-2 start, the Potsdam Sandstoners polished off the 2007 regular season winning five of their last six games, including a 42-8 victory over the St. Lawrence Central Larries in a Monday night game under the lights. The game was originally slated for Friday night, but postponed due to heavy rains that affected field conditions. Potsdam’s Nick Howard pounded out another 168 yards and two touchdowns, including a 50-yarder. Quarterback Jerry Coleman contributed on both sides of the ball with four carries for 99 yards, a 31-yard touchdown strike to Dale McKay and and interception. Robert Middlemiss also scored two first-half tocuhdowns on runs of two and 35 yards. Dalan McHenry rounded out the Stoners’ scoring with a four-yard TD rush in the fourth quarter. The Larries’ bright spots were a 39-yard TD pass from quarterback Phil Dishaw to Adam Soller who snagged three catches for 66 yards. Dishaw was 7-for-14 through the air for 107 yards.

PERU FINISHES UNBEATEN WITH 41-0 WIN VS. SENTINELS

Ticonderoga’s Matt Bussey (21) makes the run around the right side for positive gain with the help of the block from Shane Fuller (60). In the season finale at the Apple Bowl, the Peru Indians polished off an unblemished 8-0 season while delivering a 41-0 shutout against the Ticonderoga Sentinels. Peru, the Northern Football Conference Class B East regular-season champions, took quick measure of the Class D season champs when Zach Blocker ran back a 50-yard punt return just two minutes into the game to take the quick 6-0 lead. Peru struck twice more during the first quarter to open a 20-0 lead and the rout was on. The Indians struck again in the second quarter on the TD pass from Tyler Hoey to take a 27-0 lead into the break. As the team returned for the second half, the Indians kept their attack at the heart the Sentinel defense, scoring twice more in the third quarter to pile up an insurmountable 41-0 lead, which turned out to be the final score. With the win, Peru concluded the regular season with a perfect 8-0 season, while Ticonderoga fell to 6-2.

TUPPER BEATS RED STORM; FIRST UNDEFEATED IN 59 YRS.

The Tupper Lake Lumberjacks celebrate their first undefeated season since 1948 as they raised the Mayor's Cup following their 6-0 win over the Saranac Lake Red Storm on a very rainy Friday night.  The Cup is the traditional prize for winning the annual game between the neighboring Tri-Lakes rivals.  Tupper Lake has won the cup two years in a two -- both times in torrential rains and very muddy conditions.  Game Gallery

Saranac Lake Red Storm quarterback Nate Webb slips past a diving Logan Klossner (41) who is tackled from behind and gains a first down during third-quarter action.

Northern Football Conference leading rusher Logan Klossner (41) cuts inside of the block by Bob Lawyer (35) and gains a first down. Klossner's 4th quarter touchdown run was all the Lumberjacks needed to secure the 6-0 win.

TUPPER LAKE 6, SARANAC LAKE 0
Their last two encounters had been mud baths, but exciting finishes for the Tupper Lake Lumberjacks and the Saranac Lake Red Storm in the annual Mayor’s Cup rivalry between the neighboring Tri-Lakes squads. For three quarters on the rain-soaked turf that thwarted the rushers, the Jacks and Storm traded field position. Then in the fourth quarter, the conference’s leading rusher, Tupper Lake’s Logan Klossner slammed the ball into the end zone from the Saranac Lake five-yard line resulting in the game’s only score in a 6-0 win. The victory wrapped up the first undefeated regular season in Tupper Lake (8-0) since 1944. The Red Storm fell to 5- 3. Klossner finished with a game-high 29 carries for 106 yards rushing. Saranac Lake played without the services of its regular quarterback Keegan Muldowney and leading receiver Steve Burpoe, due to injury Their best chance came on a field goal attempt on their first drive of the game, but Nick Fortune’s boot fell just short. Despite the hugely-difficult playing conditions, there were just two turnovers.

MORIAH 20, SARANAC CENTRAL 12
Moriah’s James Carlson rushed 17 times, rolled up 168 yards rushing and contributed a touchdown for his most productive game of the season, leading the Vikings to a 20-12 win over the Saranac Central Chiefs on Friday night. Carlson’s score game just 58 seconds into the game on a 73-yard touchdown carry. Saranac countered on a 25-yard TD hookup from Jason Lavarnway to Cody Cook, but the missed conversion left the Chiefs a point down, 7-6, after the first quarter. In the second frame, Moriah QB Tyler Blaise (2-for-4 passing for 54 yards) dialed Richard Larmore on a 37-yard touchdown pass, restoring a seven-point lead. But Saranac’s Nick Desroches hit a seam in the Moriah defense and returned the mail 69 yards for a touchdown just 22 seconds later bringing the Chiefs back within a point, 13-12 at the half. The game hung in the balance until the final 55 seconds of the game when Moriah’s Steve Owens muscled into the end zone from the eight-yard line and Mike Brasard kicked the extra point for the 20-12 final. Owens carried 14 times for another 50 yards. Desroches racked up 31 carries for 176 yards.

BEEKMANTOWN GRINDS OUT 17-6 WIN OVER CANTON BEARS

Beekmantown’s Josh Nephew (32) gets a block that springs him for a long run through the middle. Nephew rushed for big-yardage plays to set up Beekmantown's go-ahead touchdown in the 4th quarter, beating Canton 17-6.   Game Gallery

Canton’s Arron Pierce (20) finds a big hole along the left side of his offensive line to gain a first down.  Pierce scored Canton's lone touchdown early in the second quarter.

After a huge gain, Beekmantown’s Allen Fessette (20) gets tackled hard to the ground by Canton’s Ramsey Locke (7).

BEEKMANTOWN 17, CANTON 6
Beekmantown’s Josh Nephew did not score, but provided plenty of rushing firepower to deliver the mail into scoring position for Eagles (5-3) in a 17-6 comeback win over the Canton Golden Bears (4-4) on Saturday. Nephew got the call to carry 24 times and racked up 162 yards. However, it was Matt Durocher’s 22-yard run through a big hole on the right side of the Canton defense that thrust the Eagles into the lead for the first time, 10-6, at 3:58 of the 4th quarter. Allen Fessette (4 carries, 75 yards) drove the final stake into the Bears with 65-yard run with only 1:09 left. Mitchell Rider, who booted a 23-yard field goal just before the half to draw the Eagles to within 6-3, kicked both extra points after the touchdowns. Canton drew first blood just 24 seconds into the second quarter on a 54-yard TD run by Arron Pierce, but that’s all the Bears mustered against a rugged Eagle defense. Durocher finished the day with nine carries for 52 yards. Canton’s Sam Bradman led all rushers with 19 carries for 175 yards, while Matt Pierce fired up eight times for 72 yards and one catch for 15 yards.

MALONE GRIDIRON MISERY ENDS: HUSKIES BEAT AUSABLE

AuSable Valley's Josh Douglass (11) snags the pass in the back corner of the end zone on a six-yard completion from QB John Michael Bresett for the first score of the game, 7-0.  But Malone's Derek Hanna countered with a six-yard TD run, the Huskies succeeded on a two-point conversion to John Beebe, then held the Patriots scoreless in the second half to squeeze out their first win, 8-7  (Curt Wood photo)  Game Gallery

MALONE 8, AUSABLE VALLEY 7
The Malone Huskies celebrated their first victory of the season – not once, not twice, but three times – in a wild and confusing finish to the regular-season finale. On fourth down, AuSable Valley’s Josh Douglass threw deep to the end zone on a flee-flicker with time running out, but the ball was fumbled out of the end zone. After three conferences, the officials ruled that the ball had not crossed the plane of the goal line in the receiver’s control, placed it at the one-yard line with one second left, then ruled that time had expired and the game over. AuSable Valley struck first early in the second quarter when, in a near downpour, quarterback John Micheel Bresett lofted a six-yard pass to Douglass in the back corner of the end zone. James Hart booted the extra point to put the Patriots ahead 7-0. The Huskies countered with under four minutes left in the half when John Beebe snagged a 30-yard toss from Cory Picaro and Derek Hanna rushed off the right side for 28 yards, down to the AuSable 6. Hanna drove the ensuing carry through the middle of the line for the touchdown. In what turned out to be the key offensive call of the game, Malone grabbed the lead on a two point conversion when Picaro hit Beebe over the middle to forge an 8- 7 lead. Torrential rains hampered the passing game for both teams and resulted in several fumbles. And the Huskies’ defense bent, but kept AuSable out of the end zone on three visits to the red zone in the second half. Douglass ran for a game high 29 times for 160 yards. Hanna led the Huskies with 18 carries for 88 yards.

The Seton Catholic Knights grabbed their first victory over cross-city rival Plattsburgh on the last week of the regular season. After a scoreless first quarter, it didn’t take long to turn Seton Catholic rusher Billy Bower loose. Bower broke loose up the right sideline for an 80-yard run to the house and a 6-0 Knights’ lead, after a blocked extra point. Just before the half, the skies opened up. The downpour turned the field to mud. The Knights struck again on a six-yard QB keeper by Kaleb Gohkle to take the 14-0 lead, following a successful two-point conversion. With seven minutes remaining the game and in a driving rain, Plattsburgh’s Jared Murphy connected on a 48-yard pass to Bo Baker to get the Hornets back within one possession, 14-6, as the extra point was again blocked. Seton Catholic tacked on an insurance score when Golhke (3-for-4 passing for 49 yards) hit Kent Fessette on a TD pass with 3:15 remaining in the game. With the win, Seton Catholic improved to 3-5, while Plattsburgh fell to 1-7, their only win coming in overtime at Saranac Lake in the opening weekend. Bower carried 20 times for 141 yards, while Fessette added 13 carries for 69 yards. For Plattsburgh, Will Harris hauled the mail 15 times for 55 yards.

OTHER WEEK #8 GAME RECAPS

OGDENSBURG 20, MASSENA 7
The Ogdensburg Blue Devils captured their second-straight win and evened their season record at 4-4 in a 20-7 win over the rival Massena Red Raiders. O.F.A.’s Tylor Stevenson opened the scoring in the first quarter by hauling in a 37-yard touchdown reception from Adam Morley. After a Mike Perry interception, Massena’s Dustin Currier dialed his own number and dug in for a 10-yard touchdown run gave the Raiders a short-lived one point lead 7-6 in the second quarter. Currier led the Raiders with nine carries for 48 yards. He also went 8-for-22 for 102 yards passing. The Blue Devils’ Andy Ladouceur, who racked up a game-high 99 yards rushing, scampered 54 yards to paydirt before halftime to restore the O.F.A. lead 12-7. For the Massena Red Raiders, the rest of the game was mired in four turnovers and six scoreless drives. The Devils polished off the victory on Drew LaRose’s 11-yard TD carry in the fourth quarter. He finished with 18 carries for 96 yards.

INDIAN RIVER 42, GOUVERNEUR 0
For the fourth straight season, the Indian River Warriors ripped through the Class A Division and Northern Football Conference with a perfect 8-0 record, capped by a 42-0 blanketing of the neighboring Gouverneur Wildcats. Quarterback Josh Straits (6-for-6, 105 yards passing) plunged for a one-yard touchdown, then added a four-yard scamper to thrust the Warriors into the lead 14-0 in the first quarter. Tyler Brown (14 carries for 104 yards total) tacked on another touchdown on a two-yard power drive to paydirt for the lone score of the second quarter. Justin Swinton added a three-yard rush for score to open the third quarter, before Ryan Maniscalco hauled in a 75-yard pass for touchdown on the lone TD reception of the game. Corey Brown (3 carries, 53 yards) capped the Warrior scoring with the lone fourth-quarter, 20-yard run to the house. Swinton contributed 58 yards, while Curtis Dukes added 51. For Gouverneur, Carl Devito carried 23 times for 70 yards, while quarterback Matt Bates rang up 90 all-purpose yards.

GOUVERNEUR UPSETS RED STORM IN 14-0 SHUTOUT

Gouverneur's Justin Jackson (30) hauls in a touchdown pass from quarterback Matthew Bates just out of reach of Saranac Lake's Nate Webb (14) as the Wildcats take an early 7-0 lead during Saturday's game.  The Wildcats upset the Red Storm in a 14-0 shutout, creating at three-way tie with Ogdensburg, all with 2-1 divisional records in the N.F.C.'s Class B West.

Senior Wildcat runningback Carl Devito (22) eludes the rush from the Red Storm defense and turns the corner on a sweep that results in the Wildcats second TD. The Cats carried a
14-0 lead into halftime, then held the Red Storm scoreless for the rest of the game in gaining their third win of the season.

Trench Wars: Amidst an almost constant drizzle, both teams battled for every yard.  The Wildcats' Carl Devito (22) digs for a short gain before being dragged down by several Red Storm players including Senior lineman Conner Ferguson (63).

GOUVERNEUR 14, SARANAC LAKE 0
The Gouverneur Wildcats made two second-quarter touchdowns stand up in upsetting the Saranac Lake Red Storm 14-0 and turning the Northern Football Conference’s Class B West Division into a three-way logjam with Ogdensburg. All three teams are now 2-1 in divisional play. Injuries for Saranac Lake also hurt the offense when quarterback Keegan Muldowney suffered a shoulder injury in the first quarter and saw only limited action much of the rest of the game. The Wildcats took advantage of two key Red Storm turnovers in mounting a first-half lead. Jonathan Slate recovered a fumble on his own three-yard line, then the Cats drove 97 yards in a long drive that culminated with a 15-yard touchdown catch from QB Matt Bates to receiver Justin Jackson with 8:11 left in the second quarter. On the Red Storm’s next drive, Gouverneur’s Kevin Koernick intercepted, setting up a Carl DeVito touchdown on a 20-yard sprint, coming off a 4th down and 8 conversion. Bates, who was 5-for-13 for 46 yards passing and 16 yards rushing, also recovered a fumble and picked off a second pass in the second half that ended promising drives for the Red Storm, but the Wildcats could not capitalize. DeVito finished the contest with 36 carries for 147 yards rushing. Pat Davison led Saranac lake with 58 yards on the ground. The win was the first for the Wildcats over the Red Storm since the mid 1990s.

CANTON BEATS MASSENA 28-22 SECURES HOME PLAYOFF SPOT

Canton's Sam Bradman (14) eludes Massena pursuit as he follows a pair of lead blocks around the end for a few of his many yards on the night.  Bradman scored a touchdown as Canton held on to defeat the Massena Red Raiders 28-22 to secure a home playoff game. (Curt Wood photo) Game Gallery

Canton's Arron Pierce (20) dives for extra yardage in Friday's matchup vs. Massena. The game was the last to be played on natural grass at Massena with completion of a new artificial turf and night facilities to be ready for next season.

CANTON 28, MASSENA 22
Canton’s Sam Bradman rushed for two touchdowns and piled up 192 yards on the ground as the Golden Bears squeezed out a 28-22 victory over the Massena Red Raiders. Canton dashed out to an early 13-0 lead, then had to fend off the late surge by the Raiders. Bradman’s 39-yard run opened the scoring in the first quarter, but the Bears failed to score on the two-point conversion. Ridge Thorbahn plowed in from the one-yard line to put Canton on top. Ian Dominique romped to paydirt from the six-yard line to put Massena on the scoreboard before the end of the first period. The teams traded second-quarter scores with Canton’s Ramsey Locke cashing in on a four-yard run, while Jake Witkop countered with a four-yard score for the host Red Raiders. Canton carried a 20-14 lead into the locker room at the half. Bradman’s second touchdown, an 18-yard scamper and his two-point run for conversion to make it 28-14, proved to be the margin the Bears needed. Witkop delivered the mail again with a minute and a half remaining in the game (28-22), but the Raiders could not capture the on-sides kick in a last-ditch effort. The win guaranteed Canton a second-place finish in Class A and a home berth in the first round of the playoffs in two weeks. The Bears tapped into running back Arron Pierce for another 115 yards. For Massena, Jake Witkop scored two touchdowns and ran 70 yards. Jordan Ahnert snagged five passes for 76 yards.

TUPPER LAKE 58, ST. LAWRENCE CENTRAL 8
The Tupper Lake Lumberjacks dominated the St. Lawrence Central Larries 58-8 on Saturday to remain unbeaten (5-0, 7-0 overall) and claimed the Northern Football Conference Class C/D regular-season title. The Jacks will get home-field advantage when they play AuSable Valley for the Class C title in the playoffs in two weeks. Tupper Lake cashed in two first-quarter touchdowns, then rolled up 24 points in the second stanza to blow the game open. Quarterback Steve Doolen dashed 20 yards for the first touchdown, en route to 32 yards rushing, a 154-yard passing performance and three TDs. The Larries countered quickly when Eric Deshane (nine carries, 51 yards) plowed into the end zone from the four-yard line and Phil Dishaw (4-for-6, 60 yards passing) delivered the end-zone strike to Nicholas Harvey to tie the game 8-8. Mike Weller finished the day with four Larries carries and 64 yards. But St. Lawrence Central had no answer for the conference’s top rusher, Logan Klossner, who promptly ripped up 70 yards of turf for the next score, making it 14-7 after the first quarter. In the second frame, Tom Coady hauled in a 14- yard pass, Klossner (171 total yards) hooked up for a 41-yard TD reception along with an eight- yard scoring strike and Tony Provost collected two two-point conversion passes to open a 38-8 halftime lead. In the second half, Coady snagged another touchdown pass of 18 yards, finishing the day with five carries and 113 yards. Bob Lawyer added a five-yard TD run and Aaron Curry returned an interception 30 yards to the house.

INDIAN RIVER CLAIMS CLASS-A SEASON TITLE VS. POTSDAM

Potsdam's Cody Bonno (69) attempts to get a hand on a pass by Indian River quarterback Josh Straits (12).  Straits ran for the game's first two touchdowns, then threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Curtis Dukes in the third quarter that blew open the game, leading Indian River to a 62-14 win over Potsdam.  With the win, Indian River clinched their fourth-straight outright Class A title. INDIAN RIVER 62, POTSDAM 14
The Indian River Warriors captured their fourth straight outright Northern Football Conference Class A/Division I championship Friday night at home under the lights with a 62-14 drubbing of the Potsdam Sandstoners. The win was the 37th win in a row against conference foes. Potsdam overcame early mistakes (including a fumble on the game’s first play from scrimmage that the Warriors cashed in for a touchdown) and a 14-0 hole on two Josh Straits quarterback keepers. The Sandstoners showed early resilience, bouncing back with a 14-yard keeper by Jerry Coleman, who transferred from Indian River to Potsdam this season. Tyler Brown capped the Warriors’ next offensive drive with a one-yard plunge, but Coleman made a smart sidelines sprint and carried the ball 69 yards to the house to pull Potsdam back within 10 points, 24-14. Potsdam began controlling the clock offensively, thus keeping the Warriors’ powerful offense on the sidelines. But the game seemed to take a permanent turn against the Sandstoners on the next set of plays. Potsdam completed a two-point conversion pass from Coleman to Dale McKay at the edge of the end zone, but the score was nullified on an ineligible receiver. After holding Indian River on downs, the Stoners’ next drive was throttled on a fumble. The Warriors turned the momentum entirely in their direction when Curtis Dukes carried the mail 36 yards to the house with 0:46 left in the half (32-14) and Potsdam never got back on track offensively. Dukes scored two more touchdowns (35-yard carry and 45-yard pass), racked up 218 yards on 11 carries and 45 more yards pass receiving to log his best game of the season. Corey Brown and Andre Green also contributed fourth-quarter touchdown. Tyler Brown rushed 12 times for 74 yards. Coleman led Potsdam with 119 yards rushing, while Nick Howard carried 21 times for 78 yards.

OTHER WEEK #7 GAME RECAPS

OGDENSBURG 44, MALONE 6
Ogdensburg’s Andy Ladouceur piled up a season-best four touchdowns while rushing for a game- high 111 yards to thrust the Blue Devils to a 44-6 thrashing of the Malone Huskies. The Blue Devils spread their scoring across all four quarters, notching two touchdowns in the first and third quarters and single scores in the second and fourth periods. After scores by Laudouceur and Drew LaRose in the first quarter, Malone’s lone score came early in the second quarter when Derek Hanna fired up 22 yards of his 47 yards to hit the end zone to draw the Huskies to within eight points, 14-6. But the Devils shutdown the Malone offense the rest of the way, including two safeties in the second half. Ladouceur scored the next three touchdowns to seal the victory. Matt Warner had a 60-yard punt return for a touchdown to cap the scoring. O.F.A. exchange student Mark Madsen from Denmark made two fumble recoveries to aid the Blue Devils’ cause.

TICONDEROGA 15, MORIAH 7
Ticonderoga literally kicked Moriah out of its previous first-place position in the Class D playoffs with a 15-7 win on Friday night. And the Sentinels did it on the kicking toe of Matt Streeter. Ti nested a pair of touchdowns between Streeter’s three field goals to claim the win and the top seed in the Class D playoffs two weeks from now. After winning its first four games, the loss is the third in a row for the Vikings. After a scoreless first quarter, Streeter booted an impressive 42-yard field goal just 50 seconds into the second quarter for the game’s first score. Less than four minutes later, Steve Lenhart (12 carries, 81 yards) broke free along the left sideline and galloped 32 yards to paydirt. Streeter tacked on a 29-yard field goal with five seconds left in the first half to build a 12-0 lead. Moriah made it a one-possession game on a Rich Larmore run from 14 yards out to shave the margin to 12-7. Streeter launched another 29-yard kick to round out the scoring, 15-7. Sentinels quarterback Anthony Barnao went 7-for-11 through the air for 72 yards. Justin Slattery led Moriah with 10 carries for 45 yards.

SETON CATHOLIC 27, AUSABLE VALLEY 14
Seton Catholic climbed a game ahead of AuSable Valley in the Northern Football Conference’s Class C/D Division with a 27-14 win over the Patriots on Friday night. The Knights unleashed Billy Bower two racked up three touchdowns, 21 carries and 170 yards to propel the Seton win. Bower had five runs that were longer than 20 yards each. After a 0-0 deadlock through the first 12 minutes, the Knights offensive line game the quick rusher some serious second and third quarter protection. A pair of back-to-back TD scores in the second quarter -- Bower’s standard end-around runs -- put the Knights on track for a 12-0 lead at the half. Bower tacked on the third score in the third quarter with a 13-yard ramble. The Knights forced four Patriot turnovers, including a fumble recovery by Kent Fessette in the end zone for another touchdown to seal the win. AuSable quarterback Josh Douglass’ nine-yard run put the Pats on the board in the third quarter. He added four-yard TD run in the final period to cap the scoring. Douglass finished with 20 totes for 142 yards and completed a 30-yard pass.

PERU 21, BEEKMANTOWN 0
The Peru Indians remained undefeated at 7-0 and clinched the Northern Football Conference Class B East regular-season title, partially on the back of several Beekmantown turnovers and miscues in a 21-0 victory. With the loss, the Eagles fell to 2-1 (4-3 overall) and second place, but also locked up the second spot in the division for the post-season playoffs. Indians quarterback Tyler Hoey wired a 33-yard touchdown pass to Alec Currier at the start of the second quarter for the game’s first score. Connor Keleher picked off a pair of Beekmantown passes to protect the 7- 0 lead going into halftime. Beekmantown’s best opportunity was a drive to the Peru 11-yard line, but Mitchell Rider’s 30-yard field goal attempt was no good. Eagles’ drives to start the second half blew up on fumbles. Peru took advantage of the second error with a 42-yard drive that culminated with a one-yard dive by Hoey to make it 14-0. Kolby Rawleigh, who ran for a game-high 77 yards, pinched into the end zone from the two-yard line with just 0:41 left in the game to cap the 21-0 win. Hoey completed 13-of-21 passes for 134 yards and two rushing touchdowns. Zach Blocker also contributed 14 carries for 50 yards. Beekmantown quarterback Ryan Lee completed 7-for-18 for 131 yards passing.

SARANAC CENTRAL 22, PLATTSBURGH 7
Saranac Central senior rusher Nick Desroches had a “senior day” on Senior Day, rolling up the turf for 297 yards and three touchdowns in guiding the Chiefs to a 22-7 win over Plattsburgh. And all three touchdowns were big-yardage finishes. The Hornets only mustered 97 total yards on offense to counter. Desroches’ best game of the season was also the single-best run total in a single game this season in the Northern Football Conference. Desroches broke free and dashed 43 yards up the right sideline, completing the touchdown run while dragging a Hornets’ defender with him into the end zone. The Chiefs padded their lead to 14-0 when Desroches muscled through the interior line, flashed to the outside and scampered another 45 yards to paydirt. He also added the two-point conversion. The Hornets’ lone score came quickly in the second half when Will Harris (24 carries, 110 yards) took the plunge from the one-yard line and narrowed the margin to 14-7. But Desroches gave Plattsburgh little time to savor the score. A minute and 25 seconds later, Desroches found daylight through the defense again, pounding the ball 51 yards to the house. Fourth-quarter interceptions by the Chiefs’ Mark Eggleston and Charles Beshaw sealed the 22-7 victory.

TUPPER HANGS ON TO BEAT CANTON BEHIND KLOSSNER

Tupper Lake’s running back Logan Klossner (41) sidesteps Canton tackler Sam Bradman (14).  After Canton's Arron Pierce scored on a 10-yard run in the first quarter, Klossner got the call on a pair of one-yard touchdown runs to give the Lumberjacks (6-0) the win.  However, the Jacks had to fend off Canton's final drive at the eight-yard line in the last 20 seconds.  Klossner intercepted a Ramsey Locke pass to the end zone to seal the win.  (Eric Foote photo)  Game Gallery

TUPPER LAKE 14, CANTON 6
A last-minute defensive stand, capped by Logan Klossner’s interception with just 18 seconds left in the game, thwarted Canton’s last-ditch effort to tie the contest and sealed a 14-6 road victory for the undefeated Tupper Lake Lumberjacks (6-0). Klossner also led the Lumberjacks offensively, carrying 34 times for 196 yards and both touchdowns. Canton took the early lead 6-0 on a 10-yard touchdown run by Arron Pierce at 7:35 of the first quarter. But that was the only scoring Canton could muster in the defensive slugfest. While Canton keyed much of its defense against Klossner, the conference’s leading rusher and allowed him only one long gain in the second quarter, they were unable to prevent the senior rusher from penetrating the end zone on goal-line stands from the one-yard line in the second and fourth quarters.

GOUVERNEUR ROLLS TO 49-14 WIN OVER ST. LAWRENCE CTL.

Gouverneur's Carl DeVito (22) rumbles through the Larries defense for a sizeable pickup of yardage.  The Wildcats got a quick start, opening up a 28-0 lead at the half, before coasting to their second straight win, 49-14 over St. Lawrence Central.

Gouverneur’s Cory Storie rolled up 118 yards on just six carries and contributed two touchdowns as the Wildcats (2-4) won their second in a row, beating the St. Lawrence Central Larries 49-14. Wildcat play caller Matt Bates delivered the mail to the end zone twice on runs of 30 and two yards. Carl DeVito (13 carries, 73 yards) scored the first touchdown on a four-yard scramble. Duane Roberts also hit paydirt and defender Bryant Durham scampered 40 yards to score after an interception. For the Larries (0-6), Eric Deshane rambled seven yards for one score, while Truman Gale collected 97 yards in pass receptions and a touchdown.

STRAITS, SMITH-ALLEN LEAD INDIAN RIVER PAST O.F.A. 52-6

Ogdensburg quarterback Adam Morley (23) dives over one of his own offensive linemen to recover the football after it gets popped from his grasp by Indian River's Jeffery Hope (56) in first quarter action.  Morley recovered the ball, but the drive stalled.  The Warriors blazed a 22-6 lead at the half, en route to a 52-6 win over the Ogdensburg Blue Devils (2-4) and remained undefeated at 6-0.  (Bob LaRue photo)  Game Gallery

The first drive of the game brought controversy when Warrior quarterback Josh Straits (12) fumbled, the ball popped in the air and appeared to be recovered by O.F.A.'s John McGill (40).  However, the officials ruled that Straits had been stopped and marked his forward progress.  The Warriors were allowed to finish the drive and scored a touchdown, going up 8-0.

Ogdensburg's lone score was set up on a key catch-and-run by Andy Ladouceur (14) down to just a foot from the end line.  On the next play, QB Adam Morley's keeper put O.F.A. on the board.

INDIAN RIVER 52, OGDENSBURG 6
Quarterback Josh Straits and rusher Nate Smith-Allen each scored two touchdowns in leading the Indian River Warriors to a convincing 52-6 win over the O.F.A. Blue Devils. Smith-Allen (two catches for 70 yards) reeled in a 55-yard touchdown pass and returned a punt for another 40-yard score, while Straits (155 yards rushing and 90 yards passing) blasted through the line for an 82- yard touchdown scamper and contributed a 15-yard score. The Indian River defense also contributed to the scoring when Ryan Maniscalco snatched an Adam Morley pass at midfield and sprinted 50 yards to paydirt. Down 22-0 in the second quarter, the Blue Devils notched their lone score after Morley hooked up with Andy Ladouceur on a pass reception to set up a one-foot QB keeper. Ladouceur led Blue Devil rushers with 13 carries and 69 yards. For the Warriors, Tyler Brown also carried 17 times for 125 yards.

SARANAC LAKE EXTENDS WIN STREAK TO 5 BEATING MORIAH

Storm QB Keegan Muldowney gave up his first interception of the season as Moriah's Steve Owen (25) steals the would-be TD pass from David Snyder (13) in the corner of the end zone.  However, Snyder caught the go-ahead touchdown and intercepted a Moriah pass in helping to lead the Storm to its fifth straight win, 15-6. Saranac Lake scores first as running back Pat Davison tears away from Moriah's James Carlson (28) and finds daylight up the sideline for a long TD run in the first quarter of play.

The Moriah Vikings got on the board late in the second quarter when Keith Karkoski (22) plows in for the score. Saranac Lake led just 8-6 at halftime.

SARANAC LAKE 15, MORIAH 6
Saranac Lake’s David Snyder made up for two reception muffs in the heavy rain early in the game with a touchdown catch and a key interception later on as the Class B West-leading Red Storm racked up their fifth-straight victory with a 15-6 triumph over tough Moriah Central. For the Vikings, it was their second straight loss (4-2) against divisional leaders. Snyder, a sophomore wide receiver, caught a floating 23-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Keegan Muldowney midway through the third quarter to advance the Storm lead 14-6, before the successful extra point kick. The drive began when Cody Ecret recovered a fumble on a promising drive that could have vaulted the Vikes into the lead. Undaunted, Moriah marched back upfield. Vikings receiver Richard Larmore raced out on a slant pattern, but tipped the pass and Snyder reached up to make a one-handed interception. Saranac Lake’s first score came just three minutes into the first quarter when rusher Pat Davison cut to the outside and dashed 49 yards to paydirt. The Storm got two more points on a safety after a bad snap to Moriah punter Justin Slattery who was tackled in the end zone. Muldowney completed 8-of-19 passes for 70 yards and Davison carried 11 times for 93 yards to lead Saranac Lake. Moriah’s Steve Owens ran 13 times for 58 yards.

OTHER WEEK #6 GAME RECAPS

MASSENA 14, PLATTSBURGH 13
The Massena Red Raiders took advantage of two big plays to edge the Plattsburgh Hornets 14-13 in a thriller – the second time in three years against the Hornets at home. Midway through the second quarter, after the Raiders were stopped on the Hornet 20 on a pass interception, Massena safety Jordan Ahnert plucked Plattsburgh’s Nick Callioras for the interception and returned it 24 yards untouched for a 6-0 lead. Plattsburgh scrambled to mount a countering drive in the final minute of the first half, pitching deep to Matt Hughey for a 54-yard gain, but with the ball positioned on the Massena one-yard line, time ran out for intermission. Plattsburgh bounced back in the third quarter, blocking a Raider punt and diving on the loose ball in the end zone for a touchdown to give the Hornets a 7-6 lead, after the T.J. McCarty’s extra-point kick. But the celebration was short-lived. On the ensuring kickoff, Ryan Ordway fought off several would-be tackles and powered his way to the Hornet 7, which set up Jake Witkop for the game-winning rush. Raider QB Dustin Currier called his own number for the two-point conversion, 14-7. Plattsburgh countered later in the third quarter when Will Harris scored the Hornets’ only offensive touchdown, but the extra point kick sailed wide. Witkop finished the day with a game- best 20 catches for 89 yards, Joel Diagostino added 68 yards and Currier contributed 54 more. For Plattsburgh, Harris racked up 89 years on 15 carries, while Callioras was 7-for-20 passing for 88 yards.

TICONDEROGA 26, SARANAC CENTRAL 6
Ticonderoga racked up a pair of first-quarter touchdowns, then added insurance scores on a fumble recovery in the end zone and another on a blocked punt to defeat the Saranac Chiefs 26-6. Ticonderoga’s Josh Huestis (12 carries, 75 yards) plowed through the middle from eight yards out for their first score. Jake Kelly dove on ball in the end zone after the errant snap to the Chiefs’ punter to open a 14-0 lead. Saranac Central did not have the services of their leading rusher Nick Desroches for the night, managing to score only in the second quarter on a Cody Wood interception that he returned 55 yards to the end zone to cut into the Sentinels’ lead 14-6. Kyrs Ross (16 carries, 127 yards) jumped the Sentinels’ lead to 20-6 early in the third quarter with a 46-yard TD romp. Ti’s last score came in the fourth quarter when Huestis grabbed a blocked punt, shagged several tackles and dashed 40 yards to paydirt.

POTSDAM 21, MALONE 0
Potsdam’s Robert Middlemiss collected a game-high 138 yards rushing on 10 carries, while Dale McKay snagged a three-yard touchdown reception and returned an interception 12 yards for a score to carry the Sandstoners to their fourth straight win, 20-0, over the Malone Huskies (0-6). McKay also booted three extra points for the Stoners (4-2). Potsdam’s leading rusher Nick Howard contributed 82 yards on the ground and another touchdown. Derek Hanna led Franklin Academy with 12 carries for 64 yards.  The Huskies suffered four turnovers, including three fumbles, in the loss.

PERU 36, AUSABLE VALLEY 7
The Peru Indians broke a 7-7 tie through the first quarter with 22 unanswered points in the second frame to defeat AuSable Valley 36-7 and remain undefeated (6-0) atop Class B East in the Northern Football Conference. Peru quarterback Tyler Hoey, the conference’s leading passer, completed 8-of-10 passes for 211 yards and four touchdowns, while scampering for another score in the Indians’ romp. The Patriots provided a quick-strike wakeup call just 50 seconds into the game when they returned the opening kickoff 65 yards to the Peru 12, then two plays later QB John Michael Bresette dashed to paydirt on a nine-yard score. But that was the extent of the Pats’ scoring. The Indians immediately hit the comeback trail, with Hoey orchestrating a 65-yard drive that culminated with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Alec Currier. Three touchdown scores in the second quarter featured Hoey’s three-yard run to give the Indians the lead for good, plus touchdown receptions of 58 yards to Zach Blocker and 15 yards to Alec Currier, making it 29-7 at the half. In the third quarter, Hoey rolled left and delivered a quick nine-yard TD reception to Andrew McCormick, but came up limping. With the game well in hand, Coach Larry Ewald brought in backup QB Connor Keleher to handle the fourth quarter. Peru rusher Mike Schmitt also saw his game end early in the third quarter, due to injury. He finished the day with nine carries for 62 yards. Josh Douglass led AuSable with 14 carries for 63 yards.

BEEKMANTOWN 28, SETON CATHOLIC 8
The Beekmantown Eagles finally gave their hometown faithful something to cheer about at home, but not before struggling to find themselves down again on home turf 8-0 to Seton Catholic after the first quarter. The Eagles fumbled, got intercepted in their own territory, gave up a touchdown, went three-and-out on their first drive and muffed a punt snap that the Knights turned into a safety in the first 12 minutes. Seton scored when halfback Billy Bower took the handoff and optioned a nine-yard pass to Matt Seymour in the end zone for the score. But the Eagles found wings with 28 unanswered points and shutout defense in the final three quarters to defeat the Knights 28-8. The momentum began to swing after a Seton Catholic fumble on their own 21. Two plays later, Andrew Price snared a catch in the back of the end zone and the Eagles were on the board 8-8. Beekmantown quarterback Ryan Lee than added capped a 64-yard drive with a QB keeper to provide the Eagles with their first lead 16-8. Tyler Cook set up the score with a 46-yard run. Allen Fessette’s 67-yard interception runback for a touchdown and Josh Nephew’s 36-yard TD run on successive drives in the fourth quarter doomed the Knights. Nephew netted a game best 103 yards on 17 carries. Bower led the Knights with 11 carries for 51 yards. The Eagles have now won three out of their last four, improving to 4-2, while the Knights fell to 1-5 in the Northern Football Conference’s Class C/D division.

TUPPER WINS BATTLE OF UNBEATENS VS. MORIAH 29-17

Moriah quarterback Tyler Blaise tries to cut around the outside of Tupper Lake defenders Jordan Nason (33) and Bob Lawyer (35) and has the ball knocked loose.  Tupper (5-0) capitalized on a pair of 4th-quarter turnovers to beat Moriah 29-17.  Moriah fell to 4-1.  (Bob LaRue photo)  Game Gallery

Tupper Lake's Logan Klossner (41) slips through the tackle from Moriah's Keith Karkoski (22), before being met by Richard Larmore (7).  Klossner ran for two touchdowns and a game-best 209 yards rushing in the Lumberjacks' win.

TUPPER LAKE 29, MORIAH 17
Tupper Lake’s Logan Klossner certainly stole the show racking up 208 yards and two touchdowns, but it was two unusual and key steals in the fourth quarter that turned the game for the Lumberjacks in a battle of undefeated Class C/D teams on Saturday night. And it was an impressive showing for the conference’s leading rusher who slashed and dashed for big yardage gains against what had been the conference’s stingiest defense. In their first four games, Moriah had allowed just one touchdown, back on the first game of the season. But on this night (24 hours after the game was postponed on Friday when power went out to the entire Tupper Lake region), Tupper defense made several key stops of their own in hammering out a 29-17 come-from-behind win. Klossner electrified the home crowd with a 55-yard dash to paydirt at 10:30 of the first quarter. Rusher Keith Karkoski evened the game with a six-yard ramble midway through the second quarter. Mike Brassard booted a 34-yard field goal with 0:02 left in the first half to lift the Vikings to their first and only lead at 10-7 at the half. After a scoreless third quarter, the game became riddled with turnovers. But two key plays determined the outcome in a span of less than six minutes. Still down 10-7, Tupper Lake’s Tom Coady blitzed through the offensive line, stepped in front of a Moriah handoff, grabbed the ball and jetted untouched to the end zone. On Moriah’s next drive just 1:30 later, Tupper defensive lineman Brian Bennett swatted an intended screen pass into the air, caught the ball himself and rambled down to the three-yard line Bob Lawyer then plunged into the end zone for another Tupper strike and a 22-10 lead. Moriah inched closer on a successful return to the one-yard line where Steve Owens finished off the drive with a one-yard plunge, 22-17. However, after Tupper Lake recovered the onsides kick, Klossner broke off a 59-yard touchdown run with 3:08 to seal the victory. Karkoski led the Vikings' ground game with 88 total yards, while Owens logged 55. Richard Larmore snagged five passes for 75 yards.

INDIAN RIVER 48, CANTON 7
The Indian River Warriors forced four Canton turnovers and scored 28 points off the miscues in the first half, built a 35-0 halftime lead and coasted to a 48-7 victory over the Golden Bears in Canton on Saturday. Nate Smith-Allen intercepted two passes, Ryan Maniscalco snagged another and Tyler Brown recovered a fumble for the Warriors. Josh Straits’ 11-yard rushing touchdown provided the only score of the first quarter (8-0), but the Warriors blew the contest open with 28 unanswered points in the second frame. Tyler Brown (86 yards rushing) racked up four TD’s of six, seven and 17 yards rushing and a 52-yard TD pass completion from Straits. Straits completed 7-of-18 passes for 155 yards and scored two touchdowns. Canton’s lone score came in the fourth quarter on a 28-yard run and an extra-point kick by Sam Bradman.

POTSDAM WINS BIG IN KEY DIVISIONAL GAME VS. MASSENA

The referee signals a touchdown for Potsdam's Rob Middlemiss on the rushing play. It was a reoccurring call for the Sandstoners as they racked up three touchdowns in the second quarter to open up a 21-0 halftime lead and cruised to a 43-8 victory over the Massena Red Raiders.  Potsdam running back Nick Howard dusted the end zone four times in the win.  (Curt Wood photo)  Game Gallery

POTSDAM 43, MASSENA 8
After dropping their first two games of the season, including a frustrating and heartbreaking 20-19 loss to Ogdensburg after a 19-0 first quarter lead, the Potsdam Sandstoners have rebounded from an 0-2 mark and rung up three wins in a row. The Sandstoners have since righted the ship with its biggest on Friday night against division rival Massena. The victory assures Potsdam of staying away from last place this season and any potential matchup with the Indian River Warriors who have racked up over 70 straight wins against Northern Football Conference opponents. After a scoreless first quarter, Potsdam (1-1, 3-2 overall) rolled up three touchdowns before the half led by rusher Nick Howard who got the call to carry 27 times and made good for 207 yards rushing and four touchdowns on the night. Meanwhile, the Sandstoner defense held the Raiders to just 114 yards on the ground. Potsdam quarterback Jerry Coleman also added a 37-yard TD run before the half. Potsdam sealed the deal in the second half with power-running touchdowns from Howard, Shane McHenry and Robert Middlemiss. Massena’s lone touchdown came in the fourth quarter when quarterback Dustin Currier muscled into the end zone from the four-yard line. Jake Witkop led the Raiders with 36 yards rushing.

OTHER WEEK #5 GAME RECAPS

TICONDEROGA 37, AUSABLE VALLEY 14
The Ticonderoga Sentinels stayed in contention with Moriah for the Class C/D regular-season title with a 37-14 Northern Football Conference win over the AuSable Valley Patriots. The Sentinels relinquished only 21 yards to the Pats in the first half and just two fourth-quarter scores to raise their season record to 4-1. Krys Ross made productive use of his game-high 81 yards to produce three touchdowns. Matt Streeter snagged a 28-yard touchdown pass from Anthony Barnao to strike first. Ross piled on a pair of first-half TD plunges of one and two yards to help rack of a 31-0 lead at the half. Barnao, who completed 3-of-4 for 110 yards through the air, launched a 50-yard pass to Jake Taylor, followed by a 27-yard Ross TD blitz, to put the game out of reach in the third quarter. Steven Lenhart rushed for 37 yards and Bryant Austin added 45. The Patriots scored twice in the fourth quarter: the first on Josh Haywood's 35-yard catch, with the other on Ben Prentiss’ 63-yard dash to the end zone. Prentiss let the Pats with 84 yards rushing.

Storm Coach Mark Farmer was pleased with his team’s performance. “It wasn’t any single person, it was really a team effort. There were a lot of key performances.” Among them, Pat Davison (6 carries, 109 total yards) opened the scoring with a resounding 86-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter. Keegan Muldowney completed a 21-yard touchdown pass to Steven Burpoe (five catches for 83 yards) and plunged two keepers from a yard out to open up a 28-0 halftime lead. The Seton Catholic Knights set the tone just 0:21 into the ball game when Billy Bowers flashed around the outside to the left and flew 65 yards to the end zone. It was one of three Bowers’ end-around touchdown runs that guided the Knights (1-4) to their first win of the season, 27-0, over the St. Lawrence Central Larries (0-5). Bowers carried 17 times for 152 yards. Kent Fessette tacked on 47 yards. Matt Seymour scored the final TD on an eight-yard run in the fourth quarter. Prior to the matchup, the Knights had faced four opponents with combined records of 16-1. They also capitalized on four Larries’ turnovers. In a rematch of last year’s Northern Football Conference Class B title game, the Peru Indians effectively mixed their passing and ground game, combined with a strong defensive stand, to beat the Plattsburgh Hornets 17-3. After a scoreless first quarter, Mike Schmidt scampered for the touchdown just two minutes into the second stanza. Peru added to its lead when Colby Rawleigh booted a 29-yard field goal to make it 10-0, headed into the locker room at halftime. As the second half started, the Hornets used the element of surprise, successfully recovering an onside kick and cashed in for the field goal to make it a seven-point contest, 10-3. The game’s final score cam with six minutes left in the 3rd quarter when Peru’s Zach Blocker scored on a 20-yard touchdown reception. On the night, quarterback Tyler Hoey snapped eight passes for 72 yards and Schmidt carried 14 times for a game-high 97 yards for the Indians. Will Harris had the only positive rushing totals for the Hornets carrying 17 times for 31 yards.

GOUVERNEUR 27, MALONE 12
Gouverneur (1-4) ended its winless frustration after close games earlier in the season, posting a 27-12 win over Malone (0-5).
