Moriah Finishes 2nd Best in State, Bowing to Randolph in Final

Moriah's Mike Speshock (24) cuts back across the grain, trying to follow a blocker before being tackled by Randolph's Brady Morrison (9).  Two Randolph touchdowns, just 37 seconds apart in the final two minutes of the first half, broke open a 14-0 game, followed by a six-minute scoring drive to open the third quarter proved the turning point as the Cardinals turned back the Moriah Vikings 41-0 in the N.Y. State Class D Football Championship.  (Chris Engel photo)   Game Gallery   Listen to NCSN Broadcast

Class D Playoffs & State Regionals

PIVOTAL FINAL 2:00 OF FIRST HALF DOOMS MORIAH IN FINAL

Moriah quarterback Nate Gilbo swings his arm up and over in a swim move to get past Randolph's Brady Morrison (9).

Moriah's Ron Schofileld gets a sold block from Nick Gilbo and spins past the defender to get a short-yardage gain.

RANDOLPH 41, MORIAH 0
A fateful six minutes of play sandwiched around halftime proved to be the defining minutes of the New York State Class D Football Championship for the Moriah Vikings. With the clock ticking under a minute, the Vikings were looking to go into halftime down a respectable 14-0 against a Randolph team that had dismantled Groton with over 60 points the week before. But their fate was essentially unfolded in that seemingly endless final minute as the Cardinals scored twice in the final 44 seconds to took command with a 27-0 intermission lead. But to crank up the score, Randolph optioned for something they had not done in three games and only 15 times all season – they passed. Mike Maycock rifled off three pinpoint passes, including a 39-yard strike to Ryan Beach to set up a four-yard quarterback keeper for the first score. Randolph executed a successful onsides kick, but fumbled it away on the next play. Moriah returned the ball with a fumble of their own, added a 15-yard roughing-the-passer penalty and gave Randolph another opportunity at the end zone. Maycock wired Eric Bruder on a 15-yard pass to the end zone with just 0:03 left in the half. Randolph took the second-half kickoff, chewed up over half of the third quarter with a 63-yard drive, scored and essentially sealed the deal at 34-0, before the Vikings even got the ball back. Maycock won Most Valuable Player honors. Matt Hettenbaugh rushed for a team-best 111 yards. One of Moriah’s shining moments came at the expense of Hettenbaugh who took a punishing flying tackle from Ron Schofield that was repeatedly played back on the giant screens at the Carrier Dome. For the Vikings, with the 41-0 loss, it was the second trip to the big game in Syracuse, only to come away with second-best honors. Quarterback Nate Gilbo led the Vikings rushing with 25 yards on five carries.

SCHOFIELD RUSHING, MORIAH DEFENSE LEADS TO SEMI WIN

Moriah’s Ron Schofield rushed 38 times for 295 yards and two touchdowns, powering the Vikings to a 22-13 win.

MORIAH 22, ELDRED 13
Moriah’s Ron Schofield rushed 38 times for 295 yards and two touchdowns, powering the Vikings to a 22-13 victory over Eldred in the New York State Class D semifinals and propelling the Vikes back to a second-straight visit to the title game next weekend at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse. Nick Gilbo muscled Moriah’s first touchdown from the two-yard line, which provided the Vikings with a 7-6 lead at the half. The third quarter proved pivotal with Moriah outscoring Eldred 12-0 on two Schofield touchdowns – a two-yarder just 2:19 into the period and on a 59- yard sprint to the house with just ten seconds left in the third for a 19-6 lead. The Viking defense also stood tall with five sacks and a pair of interceptions. After Eldred made the game close at 19-13 early in the fourth on a Bobby Holleran one-yard plunge, the game was still in doubt until kicker Ryan Mascarenas nailed a 21-yard field goal with 1:59 left to push the lead to two possessions. Wally Edwards had three sacks and Nate Gilbo two on Eldred quarterback Bryan Henry. Mike Speshock and Ralph Schofield each swiped passes for interceptions. The Vikings will encounter Section VI's Randolph that pounded Groton 61-8 in the Western semifinal Friday.

SENTINELS TAME TUPPER LAKE IN SEMIFINAL 22-2

TICONDEROGA 22, TUPPER LAKE 2
Unlike the regular-season game two weeks earlier, the Ticonderoga Sentinels did not allow Tupper Lake the opportunity of a close game and a possible upset in the Northern Football Conference Class D semifinals on Friday. The #2-seeded Sentinels collected three first-half scores, then employed solid defensive tactics to keep the third-seeded Lumberjacks out of the end zone to capture a 22-2 victory and advance to the class championship against top-seeded Moriah next weekend.  Reactivated quarterback Robert Kearns romped 85 yards to paydirt on a punt return in the second quarter, adding to Todd Carr’s opening 16-yard touchdown run to jump to an early 14-0 lead. Ti’s leading rusher Robert Morrison tacked on a two-yard score just two minutes later to seal the win. The Sentinels improved to 5-4. Tupper Lake -- getting their only points of the game on a safety -- closed the season at 3-5.

MORIAH REPEATS AS CLASS D CHAMPIONS IN 42-12 VICTORY

Moriah Vikings' quarterback Nate Gilbo tosses a screen pass over a pair of Rensselaer defenders Jashem Hamilton (24) and Todd Deluke (60) for first-down yardage.  Moriah scored two third-quarter touchdowns to break away from a 7-6 halftime lead, then fended off a late rally by the Rams to win the N. Y. State Class D Boys Football quarterfinal 28-25.  Moriah's Ron Schofield racked up 238 rushing yards and three touchdowns.  (Steve Besaw photo)   Game Gallery   NCSN Game Broadcast

Moriah's Nick Gilbo (44) gets ankle tackled from behind.  The Vikings bounced back from 6-0 deficit after a Rams touchdown on the first offensive play of the game, then survived two touchdowns five minutes apart in the fourth quarter to win.

MORIAH 28, RENSSELAER 25
The closest finish of Friday’s state quarterfinals turned out to the a win for the Northern Football Conference and Section VII’s Moriah Vikings. The Vikes built leads of 21-6 and 28-12 in the second half, before the Rams came storming back in the fourth quarter to draw within a field goal. Big plays were key at several junctures of the game. Rensselaer's Jashem Hamilton took the game’s first offensive play from scrimmage 65 yards to the end zone to take a 6-0 lead just 0:15 into the game. Moriah finally responded on the first play of the second quarter when quarterback Nate Gilbo dropped back threw over a defender and into the waiting arms of Tom Tezar to even the score before the point-after and a 7-6 lead. Even though Moriah had two-possession leads, they never really put the Rams away until the final kneel down. There were even anxious moments during the onsides kick with 15 seconds left in the game when the ball popped over everyone’s heads before finally downed by Moriah to virtually end the game. Moriah's Ron Schofield rolled up a whopping 238 yards on the ground and scored three touchdowns behind a soldi line that opened the slots for Schofield to jet through. Moriah advances to play Section IX’s Eldred in the state semifinals on Friday at 4 p.m. at Dietz Stadium in Kingston.

MORIAH REPEATS AS CLASS D CHAMPIONS IN 42-12 VICTORY

 MORIAH 42, TICONDEROGA 12
The Moriah Vikings captured their second-straight Northern Football Conference Class D football crown and a berth in the New York State quarterfinals with a convincing 42-12 victory over rival Ticonderoga. After a scoreless first quarter, Moriah opened a 21-0 halftime lead by spreading the scoring attack between three players. Ron Schofield opened the second quarter with a nine-yard run to the house at 0:38. Nick Gilbo tacked on a three-yard run and Nate Gilbo fired off a 22-yard scoring strike just as the half expired to generate a three-possession lead. Ticonderoga tried to gain momentum to start the third quarter when Robert Kearns gathered in the opening kickoff and rolled 80 yards to paydirt, but Schofield immediately countered with a 71-yard kickoff return for the Vikes. Schofield, who rolled up 165 total yards rushing, scored his third touchdown on a seven-yard run late in the third quarter. Ticonderoga’s Todd Carr scored a touchdown on the game’s final play. Dan Morrison led Ticonderoga rushing with 49 yards.

HOOSICK FALLS 51, OGDENSBURG 6
Amidst the regular downpours, the Panthers capitalized on three turnovers, a blocked punt and a punt return to beat the O.F.A. Blue Devils 51-6. Ogdensburg’s season ends at 9-2 while tenth- ranked in the state Class C rankings. With the win, fifth-ranked Hoosick Falls stayed undefeated at 11-0. The Blue Devils quickly countered the Panthers’ first score when quarterback Jared Morrow slithered his way into the end zone from the one-yard line. But that was it for the Boys in Blue. The Hoosick front line lso played a major role in the outcome of the game, pressuring the Ogdensburg offense into miscues and disrupting pass attempts. For O.F.A., Morrow went 6-for-14 passing to deliver 142 yards, while also rushing 12 times for 25 more yards. While under the weather, Gene Bouyer still made five catches for 125 yards. Alex Hansen led the way for the Panthers with a 72-yard catch-and-run touchdown pass from Mike Brewster and alogn with a 16-yard rushing score. Tanner Williams also snatched up a fumble in the end zone for a score.

O.F.A. THWARTS GOUVERNEUR UPSET BID IN SEMIFINALS 21-6

Gouverneur defender Darren Fuller (5) leaps in an attempt to disrupt the pass from O.F.A. quarterback Jared Morrow (13).  The Blue Devils scored a late touchdown to gain a two-possession advantage, then fended off two promising Wildcat drives to preserve a 21-6 victory in the Northern Football Conference Class C semifinals.  Morrow went 8-of-16 passing for 132 yards and two touchdowns, including a 48-yard scoring strike to Gene Bouyer. (Reynolds photo)  Game Gallery

O.F.A.'s Connor Ives wraps up Cummings for a short gain.

OGDENSBURG 21, GOUVERNEUR 6
For the second time in three weeks, the Ogdensburg Blue Devils had trouble with the Gouverneur game plan, but for the second time the Devils prevailed – this time to grab a 21-6 victory in the Northern Football Conference Class C semifinals. The top-seeded Devils will host the championship contest next Friday night against either Saranac Central or Saranac Lake. While O.F.A.’s ground game was reigned in by solid Wildcat defense, Blue Devil quarterback Jared Morrow passed the Devils out of trouble and into the title game next week. Conor Ives snaked into the end zone from the Wildcat 2 to open the scoring. Morrow threaded a pinpoint pass just out of the reach of the defensive cornerback and into the waiting hands of Gene Bouyer to deliver a 48-yard touchdown and spread the O.F.A. lead to 13-0 in the second quarter. The #4-seeded Wildcats out-rushed Ogdensburg 204-113 due to solid containment by the Gouverneur front line. The Wildcats also used the rushing game to grind out long drives and limit O.F.A.’s offensive chances. Gouverneur quarterback Darren Fuller, who scrambled 20 times for 113 yards, capped off a second-quarter scoring drive by extending the ball over the goal line with 0:35 left in the first half to get the Wildcats back within one possession, 13-6. Jordan Remi completed the scoring on a 31-yard scoring strike in the end zone to give Ogdensburg an insurance score with 10:13 remaining in regulation.

SARANAC LAKE TURNS BACK UPSTART SARANAC CHIEFS
SARANAC LAKE 41, SARANAC CENTRAL 20

By Chris Engel, North Country SportsNet
A second-half surge by the Saranac Lake offense and special teams catapulted the Red Storm to a 41-20 win over Saranac Central and into the Class C championship against Ogdensburg next week. Saranac Lake scored on their first possession after the defense stopped the Chiefs in the opening drive. David Snyder caught a 37-yard bomb from Brandon Patraw to give the Storm a 6-0 lead. Then after throwing an interception in the end zone, Patraw came right back on the Storm's next possession in the second quarter and fired off another pass to Logan Ploof for a second touchdown and a two-point conversion to push the lead to 14-0. Saranac Central then took advantage of a muffed punt to get on the scoreboard.  The Chiefs converted a 4th-and-goal when Ben Weightman fired off a four-yard TD pass to Kyle Rascoe to cut the deficit in half. With less than a minute remaining on the second quarter, Rascoe hauled in a punt at his own five-yard line, hustled around three punt-coverage defenders and along the left sideline for a 95-yard punt return to the house. The extra-point kick tied the game with 41 seconds remaining, for a 14-14 deadlock at halftime. The Chiefs defense held the Storm in the first drive of the third quarter, only to give the ball back three plays later on a bad quarterback-center exchange. The Red Storm took advantage when C.J. Stewart (13 carries, 105 yards) muscled his way into the end-zone on 11-yard run to thrust the Red Storm into the lead for good. Ezra Gillette intercepted on the Chiefs' next possession, leading to a short 13-yard drive, capped by Forrest Morgan's four-yard touchdown run.  Ryan Farmer and Josh Quinn added touchdowns in the fourth quarter as Saranac Lake ran off 27 straight points in the second half to prevail.  Saranac Central scored on the final play with Rascoe's second TD catch from Weightman. Wrightman completed 20-of-30 passes for 140 yards.

Ogdensburg's Jared Morrow (13) slithers between his blockers and extends the football into the end zone from the eight-yard line for the final touchdown of the game.  Top-seeded Ogdensburg opened up an early 13-0 lead and held #2-seeded Saranac Lake just out of reach all night long.  The Blue Devils defeated the defending champion Red Storm 25-14 to capture the 2009 Northern Football Conference Class C Championship.  (Greg Ferguson photo)   Game Gallery   NCSN Broadcast

The Ogdensburg Blue Devils took advantage of two early touchdowns to keep Saranac Lake just beyond reach in a 25-14 win over the Red Storm in the Northern Football Conference Class C championship game. O.F.A. advances to next week's New York State Class C quarterfinal in the Albany area. Jarred Morrow air-mailed two touchdown passes in the first half -- one a first-play strike and the other a 78-yard bomb -- to propel the Blue Devils to a 13-0 lead. Just over two minutes into the game, on O.F.A.’s first offensive play of the game, Morrow found Jordan Remi on a 35-yard post play up the middle and delivered a perfect spiral for a score. Late in the second quarter, Joel King reeled in a 78-yard catch-and-run up the sideline to open up a 13-0 margin. It appeared the Blue Devils were cruising and would enjoy a two-possession lead at the half, but then failed to generate a first down leaving Saranac Lake 45 seconds to maneuver. Last year's champs worked the clock and a shortened version of the two-minute drill to put points on the board with just three seconds left in the half. Led by quarterback Brandon Patraw, Austin McDonough finished off a short six-play drive with a touchdown catch just into the end zone to cut the lead to one possession at 13-7. Quiet in the first half, Gene Bouyer made his presence felt after intermission with an interception and two key catches to set up scoring drives. Connor Ives ran one in from two yards out in the third to open a 19-7 lead, but Forest Morgan quickly countered with a hard run of 16 yards to paydirt on a quarterback keeper to draw the Storm back within a possession at 19-14. The clutch play came near the end of the third quarter when Bouyer made a critical interception to stall another potential Red Storm scoring drive. But just two minutes later, Morrow got the final clincher on an eight-yard keeper up the middle, stretching the ball across the goal line and extending the lead to 25-14. Saranac Lake could not generate enough yardage in the final three minutes to get two possessions, reaching the four-yard line before a jump ball in the end zone went incomplete and the Red Storm lost the ball on downs for the final time of the season.

SARANAC LAKE TURNS BACK UPSTART SARANAC CHIEFS

Saranac Lake receiver Logan Ploof (82) reels in the touchdown pass from QB Brandon Patraw just out of the reach of Chiefs' defensive end Zach Vaughan. The TD strike gave the Red Storm a short-lived 14-0 lead.  The #3-seeded Chiefs bounced back with two quick scores before the half to tie the game 14-14.  However, the #2-seeded Red Storm took command by scoring 27 straight points in the second half to claim a 41-20 win in the Class C semifinals.  (Ferguson photo)  Game Gallery   NCSN Broadcast

Saranac Lake's 14-0 lead does not last long as Kyle Rascoe (2) of the Saranac Central Chiefs gathered in a Forrest Morgan pooch-punt and scrambled along the left sideline for the game-tying touchdown late in the second quarter.

Following a critical turnover deep in Chiefs' territory, Red Storm running back Forrest Morgan (20) secures the ball as he rumbles into the end zone. Morgan's touchdown run began a second-half rout over the visiting Saranac Chiefs.

MALONE WINS FIRST-EVER BID TO STATES, BEATING MASSENA

Malone's Jake Gravel (10) leads a trio of Huskies tacklers who haul down Massena's Adam Malone (43) during Saturday's Northern Football Conference Class A Championship.  The Huskies scored two quick touchdowns, including a two-play, 80-yard drive in the final 16 seconds of the first half to grab a 21-6 lead, en route to a 42-20 win over Massena.  The Huskies clinched their first-ever trip to the New York State Football quarterfinals next weekend.  (Bob LaRue photo)

Malone's Chris Picaro catches the pass over Massena's Devinn Conger (23) at the Massena 9 and scampers to the end zone.

Malone Coach Greg Marshall got a full dose of the  celebratory water-bucket tradition in the game's final seconds.

MALONE 42, MASSENA 20
The Franklin Academy Huskies make school history earning their first-ever bid to the New York State Football playoffs by downing Massena 42-20 for the Northern Football Conference Class A Championship at Crowner Field in Malone. And Malone repeatedly showed it’s ability to execute big plays. Quarterback Jake Gravel made his presence felt early with a 42-yard touchdown strike to Chris Picaro on the first drive of the game to give the Huskies the early lead. Late in the first quarter, Massena recovered a Huskies’ fumble and proceeded to march 55 yards on 15 plays, capped off by a one-yard Evan Raymo run early in the second quarter to close the gap to 7-6, after a blocked point-after kick. The Red Raiders stopped Malone’s next drive inside the red zone, but with a chance to take the lead on the next drive, could not capitalize. The next series of plays before halftime complexion of the game. Malone’s Brad Soulia ran through a hole to paydirt from four yards out to extend the lead to 14-6. Gravel intercepted Massena quarterback Taylor Elsner’s pass in the end zone with 16 seconds left in the half. But instead of kneeling on the ball, Malone Coach Greg Marshall decided to ride the momentum and gambled on a long-shot drive from their own 20 with no time outs. Gravel quickly scampered for 40 yards and got out of bounds to stop the clock with seven seconds to go. Then on the last play of the half, Gravel again connected with Picaro on a 40-yard pass to the end zone with no time left to push the lead to 21-6 at intermission. The gamble paid off, gave the Huskies a huge momentum boost and proved to be the turning point of the game. After a crucial drive to start the second half fizzled for Massena, the Huskies took command again. Malone’s offensive line peeled open a hole for running back Brad Doe to shoot through, 63 yards to the house on the first play from scrimmage. Gravel tacked on two more touchdown runs – on a one-yard plunge, then a 71-yards score in the fourth quarter. Gravel finished with 142 yards on the ground and 174 yards through the air to lead the Huskie attack. For Massena, Evan Raymo contributed 14 carries for 116 yards and a 38-yard touchdown. Taylor Elsner made the game closer at the end with a 30-yard TD pass to Troy Myers for the game’s final score. Malone will make its first-ever appearance in the New York State quarterfinals, traveling to meet a Section II opponent in the Albany area.

MALONE HUSKIES BOW IN STATE QUARTERFINAL 54-13

In their first-ever visit to a New York State Football playoff, the Malone Huskies (white) had a short-lived 7-6 lead over Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake after Jake Gravel returned an 84-yard punt to the house.  But the defending N.Y. Region II Champions racked up the next six scores to blow open a 47-7 halftime lead.  Grvel also connected on a 16-yard TD pass to open the second half.  The Huskies season ended in a 54-13 defeat.  (Photo by Jeremy Smith, NYCapitalSports.net)

BURNT HILLS-BALLSTON LAKE 54, MALONE 13
Jake Gravel tallied two touchdowns for the Huskies, but in between the second-ranked Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Spartans racked up six straight scores to thrash Malone 54-13 in the New York State Class A quarterfinals at Clifton Park, NY. Malone enjoyed a short-lived 7-6 lead over the defending Region II champions, after Gravel took a punt 84 yards to paydirt. But the well- experienced Spartans, making their third-straight visit to the state tournament dominated the Huskies who were making the school’s first appearance ever. Brandon Beatty rushed for four touchdowns in helping to deliver the win for BHBL. Gravel ran a second TD into the end zone from the Spartan 15-yard line in the third quarter.

 MASSENA TOPS POTSDAM
23-14 IN CLASS A SEMIFINAL

Massena quarterback Taylor Elsner (7) gets solid protection and throws over the Potsdam defense for a touchdown to Ben Thomas (35) who stumbles into the end zone for the game's first score.  Massena held the 7-0 lead at the half, and led just 10-7 through three quarters before the teams went on a scoring spree.  The Red Raiders emerged with their first win on their new artificial turf with a 23-14 playoff victory in the Northern Football Conference Class A semifinals.  (Bob LaRue photo) Game Gallery

Goal Line Stand: Massena linebacker Evan Raymo (12) stiffens his block at the goal line and prevents Potsdam quarterback John Coleman from breaking into the end zone and potentially tying the score in the second quarter.

MASSENA 23, POTSDAM 14
The Massena Red Raiders outscored the Potsdam Sandstoners 16-14 in a wild fourth-quarter finish in winning the Northern Football Conference semifinal game 23-14 for their first-ever victory on their new artificial turf field. Massena posted the only score of the first half when Ben Thomas reeled in a 21-yard pass from quarterback Taylor Elsner with 1:01 to go in the first quarter. Massena’s Evan Raymo made a key stop late in the first half when he stood up Potsdam QB John Coleman at the goalline on fourth-and-goal to preserve the Raiders’ lead at the half. The 7-0 margin continued into a wild fourth quarter, until Elsner booted a 19-yard field goal with 10:24 on the clock to open a 10-0 lead. The Raiders stopped Potsdam’s first three drives without a first down to start the second half, but Potsdam got on the scoreboard following the game’s only fumble. Zac Linsky slammed into the end zone from the Massena 3-yard-line to pull Potsdam back to within three points, 10-7, with 5:49 left. However, the Raiders marched back with a 72-yard drive that consumed 3:17, culminating with Raymo’s nine-yard scamper to restore the 10-point margin, 17-7.  BEEKMANTOWN TOPS PERU FOR CLASS B CHAMPIONSHIP

BEEKMANTOWN 41, PERU 15
In just over 18 minutes of play, the Beekmantown Eagles established their dominance over the Peru Indians for the second time this season and rolled to a 41-15 victory in the Northern Football Conference Class B Championship. With the win, Beekmantown ran the table of regular-season and playoff wins in all nine games and advanced the Eagles to the New York State Class B quarterfinals on November 13th to face the winner of Lansingburgh vs. Schalmont from Section II. Patrick Manor led the Eagles with three rushing touchdowns, 134 total yards and two interceptions, while Matt Durocher added nine carries for 118 yards and one touchdown. Beekmantown rolled up 21 points in the first 18 minutes of play when Manor ran for 34, one and two yards, capping three dominating drives. Peru got an ounce of momentum when quarterback Rob Duquette plunged into the end zone from the one-yard lien with 45 seconds left in the half, only to have Beekmantown connect on a quick 55-yard drive that took just 22 seconds and ended when Jonathan Manor gathered in a 25-yard pass, fumbled just outside the goal line, then recovered the ball in the end zone to open a 28-7 lead at the half. The Indians suffered the loss of the conference’s leading rusher Connor Keleher to an injury in the second quarter. Durocher snapped off a 25-yard run to the house midway through the third quarter to dash virtually any hope for an Indians recovery. David Ragone gave Peru one final highlight for the season with an 11-yard catch from Duquette with 4:41 to go.
