Moriah Finishes 2nd Best in State, Bowing to Randolph in
Final |
|
|
|

Moriah's Mike Speshock (24) cuts back across the
grain, trying to follow a blocker before being
tackled by Randolph's Brady Morrison (9). Two
Randolph touchdowns, just 37 seconds apart in the
final two minutes of the first half, broke open a
14-0 game, followed by a six-minute scoring drive to
open the third quarter proved the turning point as
the Cardinals turned back the Moriah Vikings 41-0 in
the N.Y. State Class D Football Championship.

PIVOTAL FINAL 2:00 OF FIRST HALF
DOOMS MORIAH IN FINAL |

Moriah
quarterback
Nate
Gilbo
swings
his

to
get

Randolph's
Brady
Morrison
(9).

Moriah's
Ron

gets
a

the

to
get
a
short-yardage

RANDOLPH
41,
MORIAH
0
A
fateful
six
minutes
of
play
sandwiched
around
halftime
proved
to
be
the
defining
minutes
of
the
New
York
State
Class
D
Football
Championship
for
the
Moriah
Vikings.
With
the
clock
ticking
under
a
minute,
the
Vikings
were
looking
to
go
into
halftime
down
a
respectable
14-0
against
a
Randolph
team
that
had
dismantled
Groton
with
over
60
points
the
week
before.
But
their
fate
was
essentially
unfolded
in
that
seemingly
endless
final
minute
as
the
Cardinals
scored
twice
in
the
final
44
seconds
to
took
command
with
a
27-0
intermission
lead.
But
to
crank
up
the
score,
Randolph
optioned
for
something
they
had
not
done
in
three
games
and
only
15
times
all
season
–
they
passed.
Mike
Maycock
rifled
off
three
pinpoint
passes,
including
a
39-yard
strike
to
Ryan
Beach
to
set
up a
four-yard
quarterback
keeper
for
the
first
score.
Randolph
executed
a
successful
onsides
kick,
but
fumbled
it
away
on
the
next
play.
Moriah
returned
the
ball
with
a
fumble
of
their
own,
added
a
15-yard
roughing-the-passer
penalty
and
gave
Randolph
another
opportunity
at
the
end
zone.
Maycock
wired
Eric
Bruder
on a
15-yard
pass
to
the
end
zone
with
just
0:03
left
in
the
half.
Randolph
took
the
second-half
kickoff,
chewed
up
over
half
of
the
third
quarter
with
a
63-yard
drive,
scored
and
essentially
sealed
the
deal
at
34-0,
before
the
Vikings
even
got
the
ball
back.
Maycock
won
Most
Valuable
Player
honors.
Matt
Hettenbaugh
rushed
for
a
team-best
111
yards.
One
of
Moriah’s
shining
moments
came
at
the
expense
of
Hettenbaugh
who
took
a
punishing
flying
tackle
from
Ron
Schofield
that
was
repeatedly
played
back
on
the
giant
screens
at
the
Carrier
Dome.
For
the
Vikings,
with
the
41-0
loss,
it
was
the
second
trip
to
the
big
game
in
Syracuse,
only
to
come
away
with
second-best
honors.
Quarterback
Nate
Gilbo
led
the
Vikings
rushing
with
25
yards
on
five
carries.

IN 42-12 VICTORY |

RED STORM FOR "C" TITLE |

Ogdensburg's Jared Morrow (13) slithers between his

the game. Top-seeded Ogdensburg opened up an
early 13-0 lead and held #2-seeded Saranac Lake just
out of reach all night long. The Blue Devils
defeated the defending champion Red Storm 25-14 to

MALONE WINS FIRST-EVER BID TO STATES, BEATING MASSENA |
|

Malone's Jake Gravel (10) leads a trio of Huskies
tacklers who haul down Massena's Adam Malone (43)
during Saturday's Northern Football Conference Class
A Championship. The Huskies scored two quick
touchdowns, including a two-play, 80-yard drive in
the final 16 seconds of the first half to grab a
21-6 lead, en route to a 42-20 win over Massena.
The Huskies clinched their first-ever trip to the
New York State Football quarterfinals next weekend.

But
instead

Gravel
quickly
scampered

on

174

For

for

made

to

for

CROSSOVER GAME RECAPS |

PLATTSBURGH 50, SETON
CATHOLIC 0
The Plattsburgh Hornets got touchdowns from six
different players and exploded for their biggest
scoring output of the season in beating Seton
Catholic 50-0 in a non-playoff crossover game to
close the season for both teams. The Hornets rushed
for a game total 318 yards, led by James Stiger who
finished the night with 149 yards and two touchdowns
(23 and 1 yard runs). Trey Bucci ran in an 11-yard
touchdown on the Hornets' first drive. Kyle
Carpenter tacked on a two-yard TD plunge for the
second score. Frank Hoang had a seven-yard TD run to
highlight a 107 yard rushing performance. John Zayas’
14-yard sideline sprint closed the Hornets’ scoring.
A 23-point second quarter gave Plattsburgh an
insurmountable lead at the half. Plattsburgh closed
the season at 3-6, which Seton Catholic finished
winless in eight tries, including a forfeit to
Plattsburgh in Week 1. The matchup afforded the
teams to play the contest for real the second time
around. The Knights’ strongest threat came after
sustaining a long drive to the Plattsburgh 13, but
the drive ended when Devin Richards intercepted the
ball.
