POTSDAM SANDSTONERS EDGE CHAZY 3-2 FOR 1ST-EVER STATE TITLE

Potsdam's Kaayla bisnett (19) puts a shot on the net that is turned aside by Chazy goaltender Christina Emery.  Potsdam seemingly took command of the game with two goals int he first period when the sister combination of Ginette and Monique Cornett set each other up for goals at 5:43 and 7:51.  The Sandstoners generated a 3-0 lead when Makenzy Grant netted what proved to be the game winner from Ginette Cornett and Jessica Shumway at 6:51.  But just 69 secodns later, Chazy's top scorer Madeleine Guay broke free to tip the puck past Abby Tardelli to turn the momentum.  In the third period, Chazy's Bailey Waterbury blasted a shot form the point that beat Tardelli to the upper corner of the net with still 8:44 go.  The Sandstoners defense intensified and held the Eagles out the rest of the way.  Tardelli made 14 saves in net.  Emery collected 16 saves.

Hoisting the championship plaque, Potsdam throws off the perennial label of "runnerup" to claim their first title.

SARANAC LAKE SCORES FIRST WIN OVER SALMON IN CONSOLATION


Salmon River’s Skylar King (3) tucks the puck just inside the post to beat Saranac Lake goalie Ashley Pittman (20). Saranac Lake celebrates after their consolation win.  The Red Storm scored three unanswered and unassisted goals in the third period -- two by Rhonwen Jones to tie the game 2-2 then give the Storm a 3-2 lead.  The other goal was netted by Rachel Patraw, which proved to be the game winner.  Karlee Cree connected on a pass from the right win by Toni Garrow to make it 4-3 for Saranac Lake with just 1:15 left in the game, but the Shamrocks could not net the equalizer.  Tanisha Thompson stopped 21 shots for the Shamrocks.
 

POTSDAM BLANKS ALEXANDRIA BAY IN UPSTATE QUARTERFINAL 7-0


Potsdam’s Jessica Shumway (21) lets a shot go from the point that finds that back of the Alexandria Bay net for a goal.  Shumway scored a goal and added two assists. Teammate Jill Tardelli and Abbey Adams each powered two goals and dished up an assist to lead the top-seeded Sandstoners to a 7-0 win over the #8-seeded and first-season Purple Ghosts in the Upstate New York Girls Hockey League quarterfinals.

CHAZY BEATS SKANEATELES 3-1 IN UPSTATE LEAGUE QUARTERFINALS

The inaugural season for the Chazy Eagles includes a third-seed ranking, a home playoff game and a win in their first-ever playoff game.  The Eagles bested the #6-seeded Skaneateles Lakes 3-1 in the Upstate New York Girls Hockey League quarterfinals.  After a scoreless first period, Chazy capitalized on a power-play advantage early in the middle period when Emily Raville redirected a pass across then net from bailey Waterbury that was initially setup on a fake slapshot from the point by Astrid Kempainen. Skaneateles tied the score 1-1 at 2:36 of the second period when Maddy Morrissey scored unassisted. But any possible momentum the Lakers had hoped to gain was instantly dashed when, just nine seconds later, a Laker defender lost the handle on the puck in front of her own net and Chazy’s Madelaine Guay made no mistake, burying the puck on a backhander. Guay secured the victory for the Eagles on an open-net goal with just 36 seconds remaining. Kempainen assisted on all three of Chazy’s goals. Chazy’s Christina Emery made three saves behind a tough Eagles defense. Skaneateles’ Alex Brown stopped 19 shots. Chazy advances to the semifinals to face defending champion Salmon River.

#3 CHAZY ENDS #2 SALMON RIVER'S FIVE-YEAR REIGN IN SEMIFINALS 4-1

Salmon River's Lakota Lazore (24) winds up for a screen shot, but is facing three Chazy defenders in front of Eagles'goalie Christina Emery.  Tia Mitchell scored just 40 seconds into the game on a wrister just inside the post, but that's all the Shamrocks would get.  Emery made 15 saves and the Eagles' defense was tight and impenetrable.  Claire Parker tied the game 1-1 at 9:46.  the Eagles scored two unanswered goals in the middle frame when Sara Lotemplio and Amanda Kempainan pounded home goals.  Bailey Waterbury sealed the Shamrocks' fate with an insurance markets in the third period.  Tanisha Thompson made 20 saves for Salmon River.
 

TOP-SEED POTSDAM FENDS OFF UPSTART SARANAC LAKE IN SEMIS

Saranac Lake's Olivia Glens (10) gives chase as Potsdam's Abbie Adams races up the ice wit the puck.  Adams netted the game winning goal.  Potsdam gained a 1-0 lead on the penalty kill when Monique Cornett snared a loose puck and raced away on the break.  She tucked the puck on a backhander from eight feet away.  THe Red Storm bounced back when Shannon Muldowney slammed home a rebound in a scrum in front of the net to tie the game 1-1.  But Saranac Lake also seriously outshot Potsdam 16-5 in the second period.  However, Potsdam turned the tide in the third period, holding the Storm to just three shots.  Potsdam now faces Chazy for the title on Saturday.
 

#5 SARANAC LAKE NIPS #4 CANTON
2-1 IN UPSET IN QUARTERFINALS


Saranac Lake skaters celebrate after Rachel Patraw scored the go-ahead goal that was redirected off a Canton defender at 3:29 of the second period.  The goal proved to be the game-winner as the #5-seeded Red Storm came back from a 1-0 deficit and upset #4 Canton 2-1 in the Upstate New York Girls Hockey League quarterfinals. Canton's Samantha Brown with a toe-and-stick save as she does the splits.  Brown made 18 saves on 20 shots.  All three goals in the game were "flukey."  Canton netted the opening goal off the stick of Michelle Varney.  The puck danced off the glove of Storm goalie Ashley Pittman, rolled over her arm and into the net.  Saranac Lake tied the game late in the first period when Meghan Meade fired a wrister through a crowd in front of the net, which was initially saved by Brown.  The officials signaled a delayed penalty when a Canton defender pushed a Storm attacker from behind, but the momentum carried the Storm player into Brown, forcing her back into the net with the puck constituting a goal.  Saranac's game winner from Patraw was inadvertently tipped into the corner of the net by a defender.  Saranac Lake advances to play Potsdam in the semifinals.
 

OAKES GOAL LIFTS #2 SALMON TO 4-3 O.T. WIN OVER OSWEGO IN Q-FINAL

LADY BUCCANEERS UPSET BY LAKE PLACID IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE

January 31: The Oswego Lady Buccaneers lost their season finale to visiting Lake Placid 5-2. Scoring for Oswego were Taylar Cianfarano with one goal and one assist and Devyn Hutcheson with a goal. Leslie Usherwood, Caty Darling and Samatha Omundsen each contributed an assist. Lauren Usherwood allowed four goals and made 14 saves and Madisyn Whalen allowed one goal making six saves. The Lady Bucs finished the regular season with a 9-1-1-8 record.  Lake Placid improved to 6-11-0 and still hoping for the eighth and final postseason berth.
 

SURGING CANTON SHOCKS SALMON IN O.T. 3-2; SWEENEY NETS WINNER

Canton's Mackenzie Lennox (12) tips the puck along the boards in a breakout against Salmon River's Zoe Thompson (10).  The Shamrocks broke the ice with a goal from Krista King at 3:07 in the second period.  Jessica Denoncourt the netted the next two markers -- with 19 seconds left in the middle frame and at 5:21 of the third, assisted by Lennox. Just over a minute later, Karlee Cree jammed in the tying goal.  Katherine Sweeney slapped the game winner from the left point through a screen in front of the net to lift Canton 3-2 at 0:19 of overtime.  Samantha Brown made 30 saves for Canton.  Nancy Cook snagged 21for Salmon.
 

CANTON STALLS MASSENA'S POST-SEASON DRIVE IN 4-1 VICTORY


Canton’s Morgan McLellan (5) gets past Massena’s Mackenzie Young behind the Raiders net.  McLellan scored a goal while Jessica Denoncourt netted a cgoal and two assists as Canton dealt Massena a 4-1 setback. The win pumped up Canton's hopes for home-ice advantage in the post-season playoffs, while the loss dealt Massena a setback for a playoff berth.  The Raiders lead the race for the final playoff berth by just one-half point, but have a tough final three games against Potsdam, Salmon River and Lake Placid. Canton’s Mackenzie Lennox (12) uses her speed to burn past a Massena defender just inside the Red Raiders zone.  Massena outshot the Golden Bears 26-21.  Canton jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first period off goals by Denoncourt (3:58) and McLellan (10:23).  Denoncourt scored he second goal at 4:45 of the second period to extend the lead to 3-0.  Massena's Karlene Garrow slammed home the Raiders lone goal just four minutes later. An empty net goal from Heather Richards with 11 second left sealed the Canton victory.  Laurie King made 25 saves for Canton.  Lindsey Rusello turned aside 17 shots for Massena.
 

POTSDAM CLINCHES NORTH DIVISION SEASON TITLE BEATING OSWEGO 4-1

Canton's Samantha Brown was equal to Potsdam's 32 shot barrage in the shutout.  Potsdam moved to 15-0-2 in their unbeaten season.  Canton is 9-5-1-1.
 

ALEX BAY SWEEPS SKANEATELES IN UPSETS, KEEPS PLAYOFF HOPE ALIVE

January 23-24: On Friday, Alexandria Bay lit the final lamp 3-2 for the win in a very physical game at Skaneateles.Alex Bay's Jamie Wiley struck first on a short handed goal at 6:55 in the first period.  Then with 4:55 left in the period, Skaneateles' Hannah Mckerchie scored from Maddy Morrissey to tie it 1-1. The second period was scoreless with both teams penalty killing lines working overtime. Skaneateles' Maddy Morrissey scored from Victoria Major and Hannah Mckerchie at 12:16 in the third period. Sixty seconds later, Alex Bay's Geneva Wagoner scored from Annie Griswold to net the tying goal. Finally at 9:16 in the 3rd. Jamie Wiley lit the final lamp for the go ahead and eventual game-winning goal. Caitlin Russel turned away 34 shots for A. Bay. Alex Brown stopped 22 for Skaneateles.  Then on Saturday, Alexandria Bay clung to a lone goal in the second period to squeak out a 1-0 win over Skaneateles in the home-and-home weekend at Alex Bay.The lone goal of the game was scored by Annie Griswald from Jamie Wiley and Ciara Vancour at 10:41 in the 2nd period. Both goalies played solid games. Caitlin Russell stopped 32 for Allexandria Bay, while Alex Brown stopped 28 for Skaneateles.
 

SCORING EARLY & SCORING LATE, CANTON BEATS ST. LAWRENCE 5-1

Canton’s Emma Pickman (16) skates towards the redline looking to get over and dump the puck into the Larries' zone.  Jessica Denoncourt who assisted on the game winner, scored the Bears' third goal midway through the second period.  The Larries got their lone goal with 0:59 left in the middle frame when Grace Lyon stole the puck in the Bears' defensive zone and lit the lamp.  Sam Corbet and Murphy Newman both tallied goals in the final three minutes to seal the win.   Samantha Brown stopped 17 of 18 shots for Canton.  Bre Johnson turned aside 26 shots for the Larries.
 

POTSDAM BUILDS 3-0 LEAD, BUT HANGS ON FOR 3-2 WIN VS. SALMON


In a battle of the tops two girls hockey teams in the state, the Potsdam Sandstoners stayed unbeaten with a narrow 3-2 win over the defending Upstate New York Girls Hockey League champion Salmon River on Wednesday at Potsdam.

The puck squirts under the leg pads of Salmon River goalie Nancy Cook (33) for a Potsdam goal.  Cook stopped 18 shots.  Potsdam goaltender Abby Tardelli turned out 29 shots. Potsdam built a 3-0 lead into the second period.  The Shamrocks stormed back for a pair of goals, but could not score the equalizer despite chances late in the contest.  Ginette Cornet, Abby Scott (on a power play) and Makenzy Grant scored Potsdam's goals.  Grant's marker proved to be the game winner at 2:02 of the middle frame.  Karley Cree put the Rocks on the board seven minutes later on a setup from Krista Oakes.  Tia Mitchell scored with 7:42 remaining to make it a one goal game. 
 

SKANEATELES SURPRISES SALMON WITH FIRST HOME LOSS IN 8 YEARS

Lindsay Angelillo (10), Skaneateles senior tri-captain, skates in traffic alongside teammate, Maddy Morrissey, against the Salmon River Shamrocks. Angelillo, the league's second highest scorer, contributed a hat trick in the Lakers victory. With no scoring in the first period, the Lakers were first on the board early in the second when Angelillo put in back-to-back goals. The Shamrocks replied with one second-period goal by Sky Timmons, but couldn't finish closing the gap.  The Lakers responded with two more markers in the third by Angelillo and Taylor Kerr. Salmon River's second goal was by Krista Oakes at 13:39 of the final period.
 

CHAZY GRABS 1-0 WIN AT OSWEGO

January 16: The Oswego Lady Bucs lost to visiting Chazy at the SUNY Oswego Campus Center 1-0. The Chazy goal was scored by Caitlyn Lapier assisted by Alexis Guay. Christina Emery made 17 saves for Chazy, while Lauren Usherwood countered with 14 for Oswego.  Oswego is now 7-4-1-1 on the season.  Chazy improved to 10-4-1.
 

SKANEATELES BOUNCES BACK TO BEAT MASSENA RED RAIDERS 3-1

POTSDAM CLINCHES NORTH DIVISION SEASON TITLE BEATING OSWEGO 4-1

MASSENA'S GARROW NETS OVERTIME GOAL IN 3-2 VICTORY OVER ITHACA


Massena's Kharlene Garrow rang a shot off the right post and into the net at 2:16 of the overtime period to lift the Red Raiders to a 3-2 victory over Ithaca on Saturday, in a key win for the race for the final spot in the playoffs.  Ithaca scored the opening goal in the first period by Charlotte Stevens from Carrie Wilder.  However, Massena jumped into the lead with two quick goals to start the second period.  Shaydi Oakes scored just 0:15 into the second period from Beth Rogers.  Laura Gonzalez capitalized on her own rebound to put the Raiders ahead 2-1 just over two minutes later.  Ithaca found the equalizer early in the third forcing overtime.  Listen to NCSN Broadcast
 

PURPLE GHOSTS KEEP PLAYOFF HOPES ALIVE TYING CHAZY 1-1

January 17: The Alexandria Bay Lady Ghosts kept their playoff hopes alive as they came from a 2-0 deficit after the first period to tie Chazy 2-2. Chazy's Amanda Peterson scored with assists from Amanda Kempainen and Chelsea Guay with 2:25 left in the first period. Just 21seconds later, Chazy's Emily Raville scored off a pass from Alexandra Betrus. Chazy ended the first period with a 2-0 lead. Alexandria's Jamie Wiley scored unassisted with 38 seconds left in the second period to bring ACS back into the game. With just 2:24 left in the 3rd period, Alexandria's Annie Griswald scored on backhand passes from Geneva Wagoner and Jamie Wiley to tie, sending the game into overtime. Both teams played great defense in OT and neither team was able to score. Alexandria's goalie Caitlin Russell turned away 31 shots on goal, while Chazy's Christina Emery ended with 15 saves. The win leaves the Ghosts within  three points of Sranac Lake for the eighth and final playoff spot.  Alexandria travels to Canton on Monday at 4:00 for their next game.
 

SALMON RIVER BOUNCES BACK TO POST 3-2 THRILLER OVER CHAZY


Chazy’s Astrid Kempainen (16) fires a low shot that rings off the post and dribbles along the goal line, but Salmon River’s goalie Nancy Cook (33) recovers and saves the puck from going over the goal line. OSWEGO SCORES OFF THE POST TO BEAT ITHACA IN SECOND PERIOD

January 14: Oswego beat Ithaca 1-0 on a 2nd period goal by Sara Molinari assisted by Danielle Faivus. Lauren Usherwood made 17 saves in the shutout win. The Lady Bucs are now 7-3-1-1 on the season.  Ithaca fell to 3-8-1.

LADY BUCCANEERS COLLECT FIRST HOME ICE VICTORY: 3-0 VS. ALEX BAY

January 9: The Oswego Lady Buccaneers beat visiting Alexandria Bay 3-0 on the strength of three Taylar Cianfarano goals. Devyn Hutcheson contributed two assists. while Caty Darling, Heather Sharkey and Sara Molinari each added a helper. Cianfarano scored one goal in each period.  The first came 33 seconds into the game on a breakaway pass from Hutcheson. Lauren Usherwood was perfect in net for the Lady Bucs making 15 saves in the shutout victory. Caitlin Russell made 35 saves for the visitors. With the win, the Bucs moved to 6-2-1 on the season.
 

OSWEGO SNAGS OVERTIME WIN OVER CANTON ON CIANFARANO'S GOAL 4-3

January 12: The Oswego Lady Bucs topped visiting Canton on a shorthanded breakaway goal by Taylar Cianfarano assisted by Emily Lloyd with 54 seconds remaining in the overtime period. Cianfarano lead the Bucs with three goals and Leslie Usherwood tallied the other for Oswego. Karissa Favata had two assists.  Oswego's Lauren Usherwood made 22 saves in the win. Canton got two goals from Mackenzie Lennox and one from Morgan McLellan. Picking up assists for Canton were Jessica Denoncourt and Katherine Sweeney. Laurie King made 15 saves for the Bears.
 

POTSDAM STAYS UNBEATEN, DESPITE COMEBACK THREAT BY OSWEGO 4-3

January 10: The league-leading Potsdam Sandstoners stayed unbeaten, squeezing past the Oswego Lady Bucs in a hard fought 4-3 decision on Saturday. The Bucs rallied from a 4-1 deficit on two third-period goals by Taylar Cianfarano, but were unable to gain the equalizer. Cianfrano scored all three of the Buc goals unassisted. Lauren Usherwood made 28 saves. Ginette Cornett scored twice for Potsdam and Monique Cornett and Makenzy Grant picked up single tallies. Monique Cornett collected two assists and Lexi Hunt and Jessica Shumway added assists. Abby Tardelli made eight saves for Potsdam.

HOT OSWEGO GOALIE THWARTS CANTON IN 2-1 INTERDIVISIONAL WIN

Oswego’s Taylar Cianfarano (5) knifes her way through Canton’s Katherine Sweeney (4) and Michelle Varney.  Cianfarano scored the game-winning goal early in the third period, then Oswego held on for the win.  Oswego's Devyn Hucheson scored just 5:46 into the game on a deflected puck in front of the Canton net which flipped into the upper right corner of the net.  Katherine Sweeney tied the game 1-1 at 5:39 of the second period, with assists to Michelle Varney and Jessica Denoncourt.  Oswego improved to 4-2.  Canton fell to 3-3.
 

ITHACA GOALIE EVERHART SHINES:
ITHACA & OSWEGO BATTLE TO 1-1 TIE

The Oswego Lady Bucs tied visiting Ithaca 1-1 despite outshooting the Big Red 35 to 15. Oswego’s Taylar Cianfarano scored Oswego’s goal six minutes into the 2nd period to give the Lady Bucs a one-goal lead. Devyn Hutcheson assisted on the play. Three minutes later, Ithaca tied the score on a short-handed unassisted goal by Carrie Wilder. Angela Everhart starred in goal for the Little Red down the stretch by making several big saves to keep the score knotted. Lauren Usherwood made 14 saves for the Lady Bucs who move to 5-2-1 on the season. 
 

OSWEGO BEATS SKANEATELES 4-3
IN GAME OF WEST UNBEATENS

The Oswego Buccaneers beat the host Skaneateles Lakers to gain sole possession of first place in the West Division. The Bucs held a three-goal lead going into the final period on two goals by Devin Hutcheson and one from Karissa Favata. Taylar Cianfarano assisted on all three goals, while Hutcheson picked up an assist and Samantha Omundsen contributing two helpers. Caty Darling also added an assist for the Bucs. But the Lady Lakers rallied with three straight goals to tie the score with 3:54 remaining in the third period. Lindsay Angelillo scored two goals and Emily Devins tied it up for Oswego. Victoria Major had the only Skaneateles assist. With 0:58 left, Taylar Cianfarano skated in alone on a pass from Devyn Hutcheson and scored the game winner. Lauren Usherwood made 12 saves for the Bucs, while Alex Brown countered with 20 saves for Oswego.
 

SALMON RIVER REDEDICATES ARENA, THEN FENDS OFF SARANAC LAKE 2-1

The ceremonial faceoff for the rededication of the arena with the two team captains, Saranac Lake’s Maegan Meade (23) and Brittany Avery (10).  Zoe Thompson backhanded the opening goal at 9:17 of the first period on a feed to the side of the net by Brittany Avery with an assist from Teesha Mitchell.  The Red Storm tied the game 1-1 early in the second period Maggie Vischer and Megan Meuller fed a breakaway pass to Olivia Glans who buried the shot.  Salmon River's Skylar King tipped in the game winner at 10:03 of the second period on a pass from Alicia Thomas. Salmon's Presley Mitchell made 13 saves.

ONE-GOAL WIN BEATING CANTON 1-0


The new expansion team Chazy Eagles are providing to be a formidable foe even for the veteran girls hockey teams in the North Country.  The Eagles beat Golden Bears 1-0 at the Canton Pavilion on Friday night for their second one-goal win, along with a tie in their first-ever games (2-0-1).  Game Gallery

SALMON RIVER MOVES INTO FIRST IN EAST, SURVIVING OSWEGO 4-3

The Oswego Lady Bucs dropped a heart-breaking home opener to five-time defending New York State Champion Salmon River 4-3 on Friday night. The game was tied 3-3 heading into the final period when Salmon River’s Sky Timmons drove home a pass from Savannah Francis for the win.  Timmons scored two goals, while Skylar King added a goal and an assist to lead the Shamrocks.  Nancy Cook absorbed 23 shots in net.  For Oswego, Taylar Cianfrano netted two goals, Devyn Hutcheson had a goal and an assist, while Emily Lloyd supplied two assists.  Lauren Usherwood made 21 saves.
 

MASSENA TURNS BACK LARRIES' COMEBACK FOR 5-2 NORTH VICTORY


St. Lawrence Central goalie Bre Johnson deflects a shot from Massena's Brittany Beckstead (7) in a two-on-one break for the Raiders.  Johnson stopped 47 shots for the Larries.  Massena jumped to a 3-0 lead in the third period on goals by Corey Thompson, Beth Rogers and Mackenzie Young.  The Larries climbed back into the game 3-2 later in the period before Massena notched two late goals and iced a 5-2 win against the brand new Larries team.  (Bob LaRue photo)  Game Gallery

THe Larries defended hard in front of their goal for more than two periods, lifting the sticks of Massena attackers and getting in position to help Johnson on defense.  Darby Eldridge nailed a close-range goal for the Larries first-ever home-ice goal.  Jody Foster delivered the Larries to within a goal at 3-2 when she redirected a pass from Amanda Locke.  But the Raiders fended off the surge with a quick goal 1:22 later from Emily Babcock.  Rogers got here second goal with 3:30 left in the game to close out the scoring.  Massena outshot the Larries 52-20.
