MALONE 2, MASSENA 1
The Malone Huskies scored two early goals, then fended off a furious Massena comeback attempt in a 2-1 win in the Section X Class A Boys Soccer Championship on October 29th at SUNY Potsdam.  The Huskies took capitalized on early Massena defensive lapses in snaring the first goal just 55 seconds into the game when Brad Fleury raced up the right sideline and lifted a floater past Massena goalie Tom Ward.  The shot came just seconds after John Austin nearly registered a goal on a Raider breakaway.  Malone doubled its lead in the 19th minute when Tyler Wescott jammed in a rebound off Zach Leffler's initial shot.  The Raiders got back into the game when Nate Pichette split the Huskies defense and lasered a shot around goalie John Beebe.  However, both defenses dominated an aggressive and scoreless 2nd half. Malone advances to state play next week.

CANTON WINS CLASS B TITLE, TURNING BACK SHAMROCKS 3-0

Salmon River goalie Chris Lewis shields off Canton's Rob Liggio on the corner kick, knocks down the ball and grabs the rebound to prevent an early scoring attempt for the Golden Bears.  However, Canton fired off two first-half goals and kept upset-minded Salmon River bottled in their own end much of the game to win 3-0 and claim the Section X Boys Class B Soccer Championship.  (Curt Wood photo)  Game Gallery

Canton's Pat Sweeney squeezes between Salmon River defenders Kyle Roundpoint (6) and Angus Cook (9) and heads toward the Shamcock net.  Sweeney scored two goals.

Canton's Jeff Jones turns the corner on defender Zach Bonaparte and heads for the goal.  Jones contributed a goal and an assist for Canton in the Class B title game.

CANTON 3, SALMON RIVER 0
The Canton Golden Bears struck twice, nine minutes apart midway through the first half, then disrupted most offensive thrusts for the Salmon River Shamrocks in capturing a 3-0 win in the Section X Class B Boys Soccer Championship at SUNY Canton.  Jordan Serviss set up Jeff Jones to break the scoreless tie at 21:20 of the first half.  Pat Sweeney scored the first of his two goals in the 31st minute on a feed from linemate Jeff Jones.  The Bears put the game away just 10 minutes into the second half when David Pynchon's cross was redirected into the net by Sweeney.  Canton goalie Brad Stone made eight saves for the shutout.  Salmon River had one good scoring chance in the second half, but drilled the ball off the crossbar.  Chris Lewis made nine saves and Ryan Mainville added three saves in net, when Lewis was added to the offensive attack.  Canton will play in the opening round of the state playoffs on Tuesday in Plattsburgh.

SALMON RIVER 2, GOUVERNEUR 1
After a brief flash of déja vu, the bitter taste of last year's first-round playoff defeat to a previously-winless Gouverneur team was avenged in the opening round of the 2007 Section X Class B Boys Playoffs.  In a rematch of the Class B play-in game, #5 seeded Gouverneur broke a scoreless deadlock early in the second half when Doug Elliott scored on a play from Nick Cotton-Baez.  But the #4 Shamrocks quickly bounced back.  Zach Bonaparte netted the Rocks' first goal just three minutes later.  Then Ross Cree's diving header in the 68th minute thrust the Shamrocks into a lead they did not relinquish.  Dan Gerow assisted on both goals.  Goalies Ike Emrich of Gouverneur and Steve Durant of Salmon River each made 10 saves.

ROCKS SHOCK STONERS IN SHOOTOUT IN CLASS B SEMI

The Salmon River Shamrocks celebrate in front of the scoreboard after winning the shootout 4-2 against the Potsdam Sandstoners.  The #4 seeded Shamrocks fended off serious pressure from the top-seeded Potsdam Sandstoners late in the game and in four overtimes, but survived the 1-1 tie and then ruled the shootout.  The Shamrocks advance to the Section X Class B championship game on Friday against the Canton Golden Bears.  (Eric Foote photo)  Game Gallery

SALMON RIVER 1, POTSDAM 1 (4OT/Tie)
Salmon River wins shootout 4-2
The #4 seeded Salmon River Shamrocks was outshot, dominated in the final 30 minutes and nearly gave up a goal late in overtime. But the Shamrock shooters were right on the mark – 4-for-4 in the shootout – delivering s stunning death blow to the top-seeded Potsdam Sandstoners in the 2007 Section X Class B semifinals at SUNY Canton. Salmon’s Dan Gerow served notice to Potsdam in the first half when he tapped a shot from Mitchell David to boost the Rocks to a 1-0 lead. The Stoners, who struggled to get a get an effective shot on goalkeepers Steve Durant and Chris Lewis (18 saves combined), tied the game in the 69th minute when leading scorer Patrick Mullen banged home a goal from Corey Burcume and Joe Chiarenzelli. And after a failed open-net opportunity late in overtime, the Sandstoners found themselves locked in a shootout duel. Potsdam scored first, but missed on second and fourth tries. Shamrock shooters Lewis, Bo Adams, Zach Bonaparte and Dan Gerow did not miss. With the win, the Shamrocks get a crack at the Section X Class B title when they take on Canton on Friday.

STONE SHUTOUT LEADS BEARS TO 1-0 WIN IN SEMIFINAL

Ogdensburg’s Mike Luckie makes a save on sharp angled shot from Canton’s Pat Sweeney (4).  The Canton Golden Bear scored the lone goal with just ten minutes remaining in the game to beat the Ogdensburg Blue Devils 1-0 to win their Section X Class B semifinal and advance to the title game vs. Salmon River on Friday.  (Eric Foote photo)  Game Gallery

Ogdensburg’s Gene Bouyer (10) has his shot turned away by the Canton defense in front of the Golden Bears net.

Canton celebrates after Nick Howard scored on a head ball on a pass from David Pynchon for the lone goal of the game.

CANTON 1, OGDENSBURG 0
Canton has made it back to the big dance, the Section X Class B championship, but without its usual dance partner. Colin Howard ripped twine on a David Pynchon pass just four minutes into the second half to lift the Golden Bears to a hard-fought 1-0 win over the Ogdensburg Blue Devils in the Section X Class B semifinals. The Bears, whose season last year closed in a shootout loss against the Potsdam Sandstoners, have been salivating to avenge that loss, but when they arrive for the championship there will be no Stoners. Canton will face surprise semifinal winner Salmon River in the title game on Friday. Canton keeper Brad Stone outdueled O.F.A. goalie Mike Luckie in nets. Both faced 10 shots, with only Howard’s goal making it through. Ogdensburg ends its season 11-7, while Canton improved to 11-4-3.

B-M PANTHERS ENDS N-N FLYERS STREAK IN CLASS C

Justin Poirier (37) scores his third goal of the night for the game winner in sudden-death overtime, 3-2. Just moments before, Norwood Norfolk goalkeeper Patrick Durant makes the initial save on the Panthers Justin Poirier (37)but the ball popped free.. Durant made several difficult key saves earlier in the game to keep his team in the contest.

BRUSHTON-MOIRA 3, NORWOOD-NORFOLK 2 (4OT)
In a highly-physical and considerably carded contest, Brushton-Moira’s Justin Poirier netted a hat trick, including the game winner with 1:31 remaining in the sudden-victory fourth overtime to give the top-seeded Panthers a 3-2 win over the #3 seeded Norwood-Norfolk Flyers and the Section X Class C championship. Poirier pounced on a rebound off Flyer goalie Pat Durant and made no mistake on the second opportunity. Durant had several key saves among his 11 stops, keeping the Flyers in contention after getting down 2-0. Poirier scored in the 12th minute of the game, then punched home an insurance goal just three minutes into the second half to give the Panthers a strong 2-0 lead. However, the Flyers bounced back when Seth Clark scored on a feed from Jake Ladouceur in the 52nd minute, when just three minutes later Ladouceur scored from James Purvis to tie the game 2-2 and force overtime. Tyler Martin stopped eight shots in net for the Panthers who stopped a five-year winning streak for the Flyers in the Class C title game. The Panthers move on to the New York State Regional semifinals in Plattsburgh on Tuesday.

P-H PANTHERS WIN DRAMATIC SEMIFINAL IN P.K.'S VS. COLTS

Parishville-Hopkinton’s Aaron McConeghy (12) celebrates with his teammates after scoring the game clinching goal during the shootout.  The Panthers ended the reign of the Colton-Pierrepont Colts, the defending New York State Class D Champions, in a dramatic 0-0 four-overtime tie and 3-1 in shootouts.  Backup goaltender Justin Tyler made two key saves and punch in a shootout goal in the win.  The top-seeded Panthers will advance to the 2007 Section X Class D championship to face the #2 seed, the Lisbon Golden Knights on Friday.  (Eric Foote photo)  Game Gallery  Listen to the Game Broadcast

PARISHVILLE-HOPKINTON 0, COLTON-PIERREPONT 0 (4OT)
Parishville Hopkinton wins shootout 3-1

The game lived up to its billing: the #4 state-ranked Parishville-Hopkinton Panthers vs. the defending New York State Class D Champions, neighboring Colton-Pierrepont in the Section X Class D semifinals.  In regulation and overtime, the Panthers outshot the Colts 9-7, but all strikes on net were turned aside by C-P's Thor Merrill and a emergency corps of goalies who defended after start Abe Baxter was hobbled with a foot injury that forced him to leave the game and seek medical attention.  JV callup Dennis Tebo was spotless in net during his 80 minutes of relief including four overtimes.  Senior Justin Tyler was called in to handle the net in the shootout.  After the second penalty kick, tied 1-1, Tyler took a key shot, then made a key save that proved to be the turning point.  P-H, shooting first, took a 2-1 lead when Tyler misdirected goalie Thor Merrill and punched the ball in the opposite direction of the dive.  Tyler was nearly faked in the wrong direction as well, but recovered just in time to tip save a would-be goal.  Aaron McConeghey then stepped up and drilled the game winner, ending the Colts reign as State Champions.  The Panthers advance to the Section X Class D final on Friday vs. #2 seeded Lisbon.

LISBON 2, CHATEAUGAY 0
Lisbon's Phil Mason and Josh Lassial teamed up to assist on each other's goal, as the Lisbon Golden Knights' rode a 2-0 halftime lead to a semifinal victory over the Chateaugay Bulldogs.  Lisbon Coach Bill Reed was guarded about his team's chances before the game, noting how strong the East Division had been this year, with Parishville-Hopkinton, Chateaugay and Colton-Pierrepont in a strong Class D contingent along with Salmon River, who finished fourth in the East, but knocked off Central champion Potsdam in the playoffs.  But the Knights allayed his concerns with goals in the 24th and 36th minutes, then frustrated Chateaugay's offense in a physical encounter that allowed only five opportunities and only two serious shots on goalie Zach Premo.  Bulldog goalie Zach Peck had four saves, but was unable to nab two pinpoint bullets, one that rippled the underside of the mesh and bounced down across the goal line.  Lisbon advances to play Parishville-Hopkinton in the Class D Championship on Friday.
